Twitter

I got on Twitter just before I moved away from Paradise in Nanakuli where I had lived for almost ten years. Soon I put a name on it and it became Platinum Horseshoe and ID of "nikaawa." And it was very elementary, not following many and of course, not many were following me. However I was soon following about 50 and I had 25 followers. Not too bad 2 to1 ratio is about right for my intended Tweets. And I found I could get another Twitter Account.

"Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts. For it is no mere translation or abstraction of life. It is life itself." ~ Henry Havelock Ellis

This one got the title from another of my blogs, Dancing Nights and ID "nikaawa2." The blog very soon got up out of single digit average hits per day but not much. Platinum Horseshoe twitter by then had about 100 following and 50 followers. The average hits per day on my regular blogs began to go up very nicely. I moved to Pearl City to be closer to the VA since my physical abilities were deteriorating and I had to go more often. I got a third Twitter Account which went through one name and now is Social Dance Oahu. It soon established higher average hits per day on the blog and also establish the popularity of each. There is also some indication of contact with the neighbor islands.

Town Dance blog remains number one mainly because the original readers establish by the good blogging of Calvin Ota. In Second place is Platinum Horseshoe with Social Dance Oahu in third place. The also rans have been Blogging Hawaii, now coming up strong and Dancing Nights, Ritmo Mestizo. They also have Twitter Accounts in their names. They are close enough so that whichever gets a steady Guest Blogger regularly will make it to the top. I am limited physically but I can get around on the Handi Van. But it is really up to the feedback we can get from our fellow dancers. The year 2018 looks good.

that we will write. We can all hope it is a good one."

Editorial

BURLINGTON, Vt., Dec. 27 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement Wednesday regarding the Republican tax plan:

"The Republicans are so desperate to spin their disastrous tax plan that they have resorted to taking comments I recently made completely out of context. Let me set the record straight.

"The Trump-Republican tax plan is one of the worst pieces of legislation in the modern history of our country. At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, 83 percent of the tax benefits in that bill go to the top 1 percent at the end of 10 years and 60 percent of the benefits go to the top one-tenth of 1 percent. On the other hand, by the end of the decade, 92 million middle-class Americans will actually be paying more in taxes, including 8 million in the first year alone. Further, this legislation will result in 13 million people losing their health insurance while substantially raising premiums all across the country. It also raises the deficit by $1.4 trillion, laying the groundwork for House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans to call for cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other important programs in the name of 'deficit reduction.'

"Instead of this grossly obscene piece of legislation, let's pass tax reform that permanently benefits all middle-income and working-class families without giving tax breaks to the top 1 percent. Instead of providing huge tax breaks to the rich and large corporations that explode the deficit, which this bill does, millionaires, billionaires and large, profitable corporations must begin paying their fair share of taxes. Then, among other things, we can permanently double the standard deduction, expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, re-instate the personal exemptions and make the Child Tax Credit fully refundable – without increasing the debt future generations will inherit."

Pub's Note: We must get rid of all these lying republican crooks.

Partner Dancing

As we prepare to enter the year 2018, many dancers are aware of the changing styles in partner dancing on Oahu. We now have three broadly defined styles of dance. The American, the International and the Social. Our partner dancing has been enjoyed socially, theatrically and competitively around the world. The three styles, while differing in technique, rhythm and dress wear, exemplify core elements of ballroom dancing such as control and cohesiveness.Though in social dancing the preference is not in the dance patterns but in the "Music." This is very evident with the emerging interest in the Oldies but Goodies kind of dance music in this century.

“For social dancers, every dance they make belongs to them. If it was not good,
they can discard it. If it was good, they can keep it as part of their collection.”

In the United States the three variations are popular and the most theatrical has been the American because it has not been so strict as the International. And the International with its competitions is ideal for strictness because they must be judged. The Social dances evolved from the Street dances that had fewer patterns but many more basic moves to music. And there has been much fusion of the American Style into the Social dance scene and for Social Dancers, to top it all - the Big Ballroom Era is over.

Maui Tacos on Oahu? Must be a typo.
I usually do copy and post if it is not emailed to me. But I saw the notification in Twitter from them and I took the chance. If any one objects because it is copyrighted I will deleted it immediately if not sooner.

Merry Christmas Everybody

The ending of theYear 2017 and everyone is wishing all a very Merry Christmas. There seems to be happiness all over, which the way it should be always. I spent so many nice Christmases in Nanakuli, and I sure miss them. I am hoping I can find a place to move to, it sure would cheer me up.

"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

Good Season

“The time has come," the walrus said, "to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings” Does anyone know where that came from?

At any rate, most of the dance community on Oahu seems to be ending the year in a nice note. Plans for parties and dances all over the island and lucky we got so much good music available to go with it. Makaha is going to have a nice December, as is Makapuu Point at the other side of the Island. They are even having Son Caribe at Turtle Bay and plenty going on in Kapiolei on the opposite side of this island, in spite of the Present Rail Party.

"Social dancers may sometimes dance alone and that’s OK, as some songs are
simply meant to be danced like that. Don’t stop! It’s your dance!”

Remember, in the last century when Honolulu was it, the one, the only, the original place to dance. Every one in Hawaii thought that way. There have been some changes in the weather. The newer fad dances will be for some reason from the Latin. Most overlooked is The Argentine Tango which is a gentle, intimate, feeling, and very close to its music. Unlike the Modern Ballroom Tangos, which are somewhat unnatural, sort of contrived, and must be theatrical. And in Hawaii we have four regularly accepted tangos that are very good, the American, the Filipino, the Argentine and the International.

From John Stranton, North Shore: "As to me, a blog is an Exhibition-stand. An exhibition-stand is an open place designed to communicate messages and that offers the option to have a one-to-one discussion with someone that represents the owner of the stand. You could notice that stands are sometimes very well-designed and sometimes quite cheap : just as blogs."

"Social dancers listen to music and they want to sing, to dance and flow on the wind - for they are at one with it. They are nothing and everything - void and expanse."

We wish a Merry Christmas

As the Christmas Season gets closer some us are thinking about the New Year. The Dance Environment on Oahu improved this year and unfortunately some of our good spots had to close up. None of them had counters on their web sites (naturally) so they had no idea as to how many many hits their sites got daily, nor do we. They never had suggestions by the customers. If they were sharing good information for the readers, the hits should show it. But many do it all by ear and if it looks pretty nice, fine.

"The Social dancers are totally aware of themselves and they dance
their way in a manner that is decided by their hearts."

So I must keep asking the readers for the right kind of photos for our blogs. Needless to say, too many photos are too many, you can't see anyone. One person photo is a no-no for us. Pairs and threes are acceptable, but it begins to get interesting when you get to four or more. Then it becomes "us," the party, the dancers, the club. We will develop the non-peas in a pod mode. What's Dat? Think it over. We got a lot of good photos in the WBDC blog write ups. And anyone can see that there were some nice people at the dance, not just me and my partner.

"Oh Come All Ye Faithful"

Of course I realize that since "I and my partner are the most important people on this island," it is only proper that we should be the only ones in the photo. And you over there, it is not necessary to polish my shoes but as long as you are kneeling. Makes sense? We are not much interested in the organizations, or the Gods that run them. We are interested in the reader/dancers. The ones that attend the dances and the ones that read our blogs. Is it plain enough for everyone?

"Social dancers may feel that they have been like a dancer who has practiced
since childhood for a performance that they will never give."

The Christmas Season is upon us

This is all looking pretty good on Oahu. Everyone seems to be doing right for their fans. This Christmas Season will be remembered for a time. Everyone is trying to do their very best to make it a pleasant experience for all the Social Dancers. Night Clubs, Social Dance Clubs and any other groups of Social Dancers. We are the body of the social dancers on Oahu. And if we can provide an additional blog help, we are here, willing and able to help.

“Social dancers have gone from the most doubted to the most
respected dancers with the right outlook and attitude to life.

There are some that live on the North Shore and go all the way to Waikiki. I don't know but seems to be quite an excursion. Have the car checked, gas, oil, tires, make a lunch or whatevah and it may take several hours. And they all accept that it may take 20 minutes to get out of the parking area in Waikiki. And they have no idea that in Waianae, the saying goes, "I coulda been home in 20 minutes." So we lives and we learns. More housing OK but need more Business Parks. They can live, work and play in their own kuleana.

The Rail becomes more obsolete every day, but many are making millions and millions of dollars daily. Electric cars, no need to buy gas, you got all the energy from the Sun. Antonymous vehicle are coming next year. Private cars, Taxis and even driverless buses. Cheaper for everyone all around. Not so good for the Present Rail Party. It's the bread, Fred. Caldwell a multi millionaire now. What happened? But Cayetano lost on lies alone. And the citizens of Hawaii lost too.

“Social dancers know that there is a specialized form of body gesture, and
so it may be said that dance is the mother of all languages...
an original language of total bodily gesture."

Swinging

Social dancing on Oahu is ending the year 2017 very nicely. We all have the belief that 2018 will be even better yet. And we all accept the fact that all of our dance organizations are oligarchies. Fortunately most are benevolent oligarchies. Oligarchy is government by the few in which a small group exercises control. On Oahu, most dance clubs have the objective of enhancing the dance environment for all the dancers. That is why we will have another dance club in Waianae or the North Shore.

"Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it."

The Swing Dance Club has had quite an influence on the dancing of Swing on Oahu. Whereas the Lindy Hop, the jazz folk dance from Harlem was free, and combined African as well as European dance traditions, with black and white folks mingling in the ballrooms of Harlem, ISTD "cleansed" out the African elements, creating the "refined" dance called Jive, no longer a jazz dance. For now, on Oahu, we are doing very well with East and West Coast Swing. And some of these people are really good.

"It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." ~ Duke Ellington

Pub's Side Note: Lucky us for all that the city advertising, (millions of dollars) to stress the fact that to ride the rail, it will be at the same rates and with the same rules as the Bus. What they haven't mentioned is the rates on the Rail will be five dollars so the Bus fare is going to double to five dollars The people in the neighbor islands are just finding out that they are going to pay for the rail too. You don't think the rich are going to pay, do you? Ask anyone in the Present Rail Party! They are all now Multi Millionaires. He He! He! And yes, no one knows who got the money.

whether she has really been scorned or not."

The Change Is Coming

The idea of dance varies within intellectual traditions. Just look at the Island of Oahu. Two ancient treatises serve as examples. Where ideas are treated as a function of language, and knowledge is derived from analysis of phenomena, the body is often written out of epistemological projects. Aristotle's Poetics (fourth century b.c.e.), for example, analyzes the plot structure, poetry, and ethical issues presented by fifth-century Athenian tragedies.

"Social dancers may believe as though everybody is watching. March to
the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in."

The Poetics mentions only briefly the physical movement of the tragic chorus as a contributor to the effect (emotional or intellectual) of a theatrical experience or as a component in knowledge. Dance can be very instinctive. In contrast, where cognitive processes, observation, and abstract thinking include bodily experience, physical movement is thought to generate and represent abstract concepts.

"Tiny Bubbles" by Don Ho

The body and corporeal experience have a more prominent place in the formation of ideas. The Indian treatise Natyasastra (c. second century b.c.e. to second century c.e.), describes in meticulous detail how correct performance of hand gestures, eye movements, posture, steps, coordination with music, and posture will affect an audience's comprehension of the narrative and its meaning.

This is the kinda stuff the upper classes in the study of dancing go through. Very difficult for us ordinary folk. But let us have a little understanding of their intent.

Social Media

What is Social Media?
By Frank Chung, Waipio

The best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument of communication. Not clear enough, of course. this could be a website or blog site that doesn’t just give you information, but interacts with you while giving you that information. This interaction can be as simple as asking for your comments or letting you vote on an article, or it can be as complex as what we ask our readers to contribute in information and photos.

“Life is the muse which perfectly rhymes, Plays with the words and
fills empty lines. For some, life is a battle, for others, it’s a dance
-  For the rich it is a party, for the poor it is chance.

Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television. Some web sites and blog sites are the same way. You have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter. Social media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate too. Unfortunately, not many of the possible reader/dancers in our blogs have seen it or understood any of it. So there was nothing much more we can do. This blog is astounding simply because it is holding up and very little action to report from others.

"The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise." by Les Paul and Mary Ford

Results are we have very few information and photo contributors. We must encourage commenting on all blogs. The blogs will moderate all comments, review and approve them as quickly as possible. They may also respond to the comments, and perhaps engage the people in further conversation. Comments are an opportunity to build relationships that can help our blogs to flourish. Some of us are working on it and many of you are going to have suggestions. This entire dance scene may someday be much more unified and nobody is going to be looking down at anybody. Rome was not built in a day.

their way in a manner is decided by their hearts."
