Street Dancing

By Gen Wong, Waianae

There still seems to be an awful lot of "young people" dance evolving all over the world. The thing that matters is that they wish to move to their music, the most natural thing in the world. In this case, in California, I really don't know what they were doing. The band was played a terrific "La Bamba" in the style of the Beatles and it was still perfect for a Mambo but no one was partner dancing. They were all moving to the music and they were obviously enjoying their own particular movements to the music.

“Social dancers know that dance doesn’t give rise to anything in us that isn’t already there. It simply sparks a fire that illuminates who we have always wanted to be.”

I am not an expert but I certainly think they could enjoy it a little bit more if someone could teach them the basic movements. Just the slow and fast step, the rock step and the chassé would be enough to start. They could have been dancing in a more partnered manner and perhaps enjoying the same rhythm together. But most of those that take lessons learn movements by rote. Dictionary: mechanical or unthinking routine or repetition, a joyless sense of order, rote, and commercial hustle.

"La Bamba" by Richie Valens

And that is if they learn at all. Put your left foot here and put your right foot there. The music usually is introduced much later. And only then do they try to do what is taught originally without music. This is the method most used around the world, so it is not a sin. The only thing missing is the rhythm, so it just isn't the real thing. Of course, most eventually will find the rhythm because humans tend to go that way. But it is a round about method. The old street method is the music first and the rhythm that goes with the music, and only then moving to that music, a far different method.

“Beginnings are usually scary and endings are usually sad, but it’s the middle that counts. You could remember this when you find yourself at the beginning.”

Madison's Graduation

Many times people overlook the basics in self editing and sometimes technology makes it hard to concentrate on what you need to do. For instance, even though you have a spell check program available, it does not catch some things, it’s not the best for deciding what you want to do about your editing. Then of course to begin with, what to write. Today it is easy. My niece, Yvonne sent me some pictures to post in this, my personal blog.

"I'll Remember You" by Don Ho

The hit counter for me is not perfect but it is the only way to confirm that I am not just beating my gums. Any of my blogs that cannot get out of single digit average per day hits is out. And I have deleted several blogs that couldn't cut it. l now have six blogs and they seem to be working into their right space. In another couple months I may have to delete one more. I do not make these decisions, the reader/dancers do. And right now the feedback is important.

meet you as deeply as they’ve met themselves. Be happy."

Not Too Bad

There is work to be done and I now I am pretty certain that Town Dancer and Platinum Horseshoe will remain at the head of the pack. Either one may go independent soon. Most of my statistic indicators hint at the point of diminishing returns for all of my blogs, and the entire enchilada is down because of SOS. The blogs all need that additional steady Guest Author with the photos of our different reader/dancers. And be the example for the others to follow. The variety is crucial for all the blogs.

"Many social dancers feel it, that when they dance,
they can enjoy the luxury of being themselves.”

Of course I have bitten off a little more than I can chew, but I kept on hoping to get the Guest Authors necessary in Town Dancer to take it over. Then I could reduce my time on Town Dancer and I can really concentrate on getting the rest of them up. Maybe two administrators, and half a dozen Guest Authors and each one contribute once or twice per month. Wow, the readership would hit over 200 average hits per day and it would be all over this Island solid. For sure I would have the opportunity to resign in peace.

Meanwhile, Latin Rhythms will remain at the bottom of the totem pole for a while. Kauai is just beginning to recognize us, Maui has a few people there that may be willing. And then there is the Big Island and I suspect there is a lot more dancing information than what has been available to me so far. I will have to be more patient. But my main interest remains the Island of Oahu because this entire group of social dancers will set the trend for all the islands.

So it all takes time, but if I could accomplish everything by tomorrow,
what would I do?

China Dancing

By Alison Dakota Gee
"DANCING? YOU WANT DANCING? You follow me." The beaming coat-check man is almost skipping as he briskly leads the visitor down the halls of Hong Kong's Ocean City Restaurant and Night Club. Once inside -- Wham! The blast of music and of rainbow-colored lights hits you square in the face like an epiphany. A Chinese band is belting out The Girl From Ipanema as some 30 couples cha-cha their way across the floor.

“Social dancers can feel it, when the lead asks, "dance?" and she says, "Yes"  to him,
- at that moment they are already dancing.”

Many of the women are partnering each other, like girls at a village fair. The men, fewer in number, seem to gravitate towards those women who are exotically dressed -- such as one in her mid-30s who has shown up in a strapless, backless, black taffeta number. And this is seven o'clock on a Tuesday evening -- when most of Hong Kong is trapped in the rush hour, weary and concerned with the anxieties of daily life. Ocean City is just one of a number of clubs catering to Hong Kong's growing legions of ballroom dancers. Young and old, first-time plodders and nimble twirlers -- they are all there, cocooned in the 60s and 70s as the 21st century seethes outside.

 "Lady" by Kenny Rogers  1984

And it is not just in the evening that these gatherings take place. From 3 pm to 6 pm daily, Ocean City hosts tea dances, where dim sum is served up with the rumbas. In Japan, middle-aged Japanese executives can be seen on suburban train-station platforms, practicing not their golf swings but their dance steps. The country's hotels, quick to step in on the quickstep, have begun sponsoring organized evenings, complete with a live orchestra. The cost? No less than $180 per person. They are dancing in the Orient.

dead sure about every damn thing they are doing in their life."

Salsa in San Diego

The Benefits of Dancing Light
by Jemadean Dobrosielski, Founder of Salsa Pasión in San Diego

For the Follower: Dancing Light and moving herself (instead of making the Leader move her) creates an environment of independence coupled with agreement. When the Leader invites her, she accepts, and then moves herself to the correct amount of time. This instills his confidence in her and he doesn't feel that he has to force her. This gives him the freedom to lead without having to support or struggle with her weight.

“Periódico de Ayer,” por Hector Lavoe

It also creates an environment in which she is asked not told - (a difference?) She controls her own energy and momentum and doesn't have to contend with the extra energy from a heavy lead. She creates an environment of consistency and leisure in which she has space to throw in that elegant arm styling she learned in class, or be playful and sexy without worrying about being thrown off balance.

“Social dancers believe that they can be creative only if they love life enough that they want to enhance its beauty, they want to bring a little more music to it, a little more dance to it.”

For the Leader: Leading Light and inviting the Follower to move herself creates an environment of cooperation and respect for the fact that she does have a choice in accepting the invitation. It establishes that she accepts the invitation by moving herself in the correct amount of time and that she is responsible for carrying her own weight.

“El Preso,” por Fruko y Sus Tesos

He controls his own momentum and energy, and doesn't have to contend with extra energy and momentum from a heavy follow, thus allowing him to execute more complex patterns if he chooses. He creates an environment of consistency and confidence in which he has the space to relax, enjoy the music and express what he hears through the dance.

"Social dancers don’t wait for everything to be perfect before they decide to enjoy life."

Rolling Again

Arturo Meza, famous Mexican writer and poet was asked to comment in Mexico City, on a Trump declaration at the end of his first year. They were disappointed that he just regard it as a sheet of paper. They did not recognize the his English was not very good. They translated what he said, their way. What he said was, "It is just a piece of sheet."

“Social dancers know that people dance because dance can change things.
One move to music, can bring people together. One move to music,
can make you believe like there's something more."

We are coming to a very good definition of dancers on Oahu and it hasn't been easy. Each faction has thought they were the real thing, but we are learning that the others are dancers too. The most elementary were the street dancers and mostly solo. Many were very good and found other social dancing in line dancing. Then we had the social dancers that learned a lot from the Studios teaching the American Style of Dance. This splintered and combined with street dancers to develop a slightly different style in the Night Clubs.

"I Want To Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston, 1987

Then about forty years ago enter the International Style of Dance and quickly introduce the exhibition and the competition style so well that they assumed the mantel of excellence. At the beginning of the Palladium, was the first time I heard the term "Junk Dancer." They had begun with stating the correct way to dance International. With good reason for it was to be judged. Somehow it was transformed and if you were not dancing it correctly. then obviously you were dancing incorrectly, with no qualifications.

"Social dancers learn that they have to live their own lives too, as best they can."
