Amazing Danced Blogs

My personal blog is finally coming around like all the others. I had a rough time when my computer went down and then I had a three day stay at Tripler which set me back somewhat. I am not losing anymore and it is somewhat static at the moment. I look forward to the Waianae Coast and to the North Shore to get some dance information in these blogs. I don't care where they come from and neither does anyone else. Just get it in here and share it with the reader/dancers on Oahu.

“Social dancers believe that you're not allowed to have legs
and not use them. - Dance.”

It has been very gratifying that we have come to realize that the vast majority of our people are "social" dancers and not inclined to be exhibition and competition dancers. We are just having fun and the minimum is prescribed. Those other dancers are a separate and distinct class of dancers. They know it and have not been shy about letting us know it. No hu hu, just accept any of them that wish to be a part of our group. But we can also accept the fact that they do not run our dance community.

Aloha Dancers!
You are invited to WBDC's Stars and Stripes Forever Dance, to be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, Wahiawa Recreation Center, Hale Hookipa Room, starts at 7:30 pm - 9:50 pm, Potluck or a small monetary donation appreciated! Attire: (Optional) DRESS WITH RED, WHITE, AND BLUE! STARS AND STRIPES ARE GREAT TOO!

"The Star Spangled Banner" even if you don't know all the words.

I have heard little about the Windward side but I know that there are many good dancers there. Most dancers that live there prefer dancing in town. And of course that should be their privilege. Fortunately in the West because of the Rail Disaster, people want to live, work and play in their own kuleanas. Honolulu Fat Cats want everyone to be forced to deal with Honolulu. Anyone remember "Keep the country, country." They didn't get away with that for too long and Second City was established in Kapolei. But Honolulu sure knows how to screw that up. We are willing to help all of them.

The Dance Scene

In the social sciences, there is a recognition of the clique group opinion such as we have had in our social dancing and it refers to the aggregation of opinions verbally communicated from closely knit people. The biggest group in the last century was the well known Creative Researchers And Producers. Generally conceded that they contributed much to the decrease in dancing interest for the last couple decades. Most had been into the exhibition and competition type dancing and naturally they were the best. They were also partially responsible for the increase in so many new dance clubs in the last two decades.

“Social dancers often find, that the impact of the music by our DJs
is so great that they have to get up and dance.”

In these situations, researchers are often interested in questions related to social choice, untruths, conformity, and group polarization. Public opinion in contemporary usage, is the aggregate of individual attitudes or beliefs held by entire dance groups on the island of Oahu. While consumer opinion is the similar aggregate collected as part of marketing research (e.g., opinions of users of a particular product or service). Typically, because the process of gathering opinions from all individuals is difficult, expensive, or impossible to obtain, public opinion (or consumer opinion) is estimated using survey sampling (e.g., with a representative sample of a population).

For us the perfect communication settles down to about five or six blogs as we have now and each with five or less Guest Authors. But we could achieve pretty close to agreement in the enjoyment of dancing in our cultural dance. Would we ever be interested in Bossa Nova again? Still one of the best World Wide. And perhaps with easy acceptance of all the other styles out there. Hey, hey, we are rolling in the right direction.

the other is to refuse to believe what is so."

Fad Dances

By Fred Chun, Waipio

Fad dances are for the young and the kids have always said, "Never trust anyone over thirty." That seems to be the dividing line for decades and its OK with me. Fads are dances which are characterized by a short burst of popularity. These used to be called "dance crazes" but no longer mainly because of modern day hype they usually last longer  Lambada last ten years and made billions of dollars. Dancing style fads have always been a part of social dancing, sometimes gliding smoothly into tradition after their "newness" has faded, and sometimes simply fading away into oblivion.
"Social dancers may dance to inspire, dance to freedom, - life is about
experiences so dance and let yourself become free.”

After WWI, in the early 1920s a string of dance crazes swept the world, including the Jitterbug and the Charleston. The decade was called the roaring twenties, it was a period of prosperity until the Depression hit. During prohibition everyone was having a ball, drinking, dancing and having fun.
Perhaps the most significant of all these early 20th century crazes was the tango which came from Argentina in the early 1900s. The tango swept the world in the late 1910s and 1920s, sparking a worldwide craze that was fanned by its use in Hollywood movies, and the style was soon appropriated to become part of the standard dance repertoire. But even then it has split into many different tangos in different countries.

In the US alone we have three. In Hawaii, four if we include the beautiful Filipino Tango. In modern times "fads" also arise and disappear much more frequently. This is certainly spurred by modern communication improvements (printed media, radio, movies, television, Internet). World War II was also another spur in the dance crazes. From Latin America, dance fads included the merengue, the samba, the mambo, the rumba and, in the early 1960s, the bossa nova. Each new Latin style enjoyed massive popularity, and many transcended their fad status to become standardized styles in the repertoire of western popular dance tradition.

Gumbo of Dancesport

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The Crowne Plaza Hotel, with its many amenities, serves as the competition site from Friday, June 29th to Sunday, July 1st. The hotel is located minutes away from the airport. One of the nicest features of the hotel is its beautiful 15,000 square foot ballroom where the dancing takes place on a 76 X 44 foot floating hardwood dance floor, (bigger than the Palladium.) A smaller practice floor of the same quality is also available for competitors. Spacious dressing room facilities are available very near the ballroom and the hotel offers ample free parking. Within minutes from the hotel are many excellent eating establishments, shopping areas and more.

"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Bruddah Iz

According to email from Calvin and Debra Ota, a total of nine couples from Hawaii have arrived at Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete. Competitions: Friday, daytime and evening time, Saturday, daytime and evening time, Sunday, daytime only. We know they will do well. They may not be social dancers in our class, but let us make no mistake, these people are dancers.

“Most dancers can make dance the mission that
every moment seeks to accomplish.”

The New Wave

We are getting closer to a good job description for the two-center. Several two-centers can develop into the heart and soul of any blog as social media. Instead of the quiet, verbal, gossipy, untruths and innuendos that we have had in the cliques, they can have an honest opinion out in public and with the people responsible clearly stated. And opinions are like noses, all different but everyone has got one. Once a day, or once a month, a decision that should be entirely up to the two-center. The hits would double on all the blogs very easily. And socially it would mean that we are connecting with other dancers that may still feel uncomfortable with club rules. They would rather do things their way and not as the rootzi tootzis say we should. Getting closer to real democratic principles for social dancers.

“Social dancers know that music does not need the language of words.
It has movements of dance to do its translation.”

From the Internet: Some night clubs are glorified lounges with some dance floor,
and lots of tables on the side for bottle service:

Sure, some people dance. Many people on Oahu, go to these places, however, to sit at their tables and look smug about how cool they must be to get bottle service. And occasionally they get up and dance on the seats around their table, or on the dance floor right in front of their table. This kind of clubbing is all for being able to say they went to the coolest hotspot, and seen by the right people. And just perhaps, they may do a little dancing. And before you think we are being overly snarky, we have all had our stints of frequenting these nightclubs and sitting at tables and looking smug.

Just received email from Calvin and Debra Ota. They have arrived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a total of nine couples from Hawaii competing at the famous Gumbo of Ballroom Dancesport Championships from Friday June 29 to Sunday, July 1st. It is presented by USA Dance Chapter 5031 and Louisiana Dancesport at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. We know they will do well. They may not be social dancers in our class, but make no mistake, these people are dancers.

Greatest With The Latest

This year I have been reading that Salsa has peaked and Bachata is taking over. However I still seem to get plenty of action on Salsa in Australia and New Zealand and now in Hanoi the capital of Vietnam.they have their own annual international Salsa festival. This is without any help from Trump. A Latino dance festival, “Salsa Holidays,” was hosted at the Sheraton Hotel, in Hanoi. And as a special treat, foreign dancers, including Canadian and Australia have entries. This is a very new regime that's for sure. The event includes an opening ceremony with seminars, dance parties and Salsa lovers have a chance to enjoy salsa dance performances and take part in a course guided by world renowned dancers and instructors.

“Social dancers have it often, that all important moment in movement. They must make the moment important, vital, and worth living and not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.

We are getting some glitzy Salsa in Hawaii and those of you that think the golden days of salsa are in the past, what's going on here will show you just how wrong you are. It's still very much alive, and kicking like a mule. The above is definitely on the upbeat. But in New York many of the hot Salsa Clubs have folded, and the movement is traveling West. Could be in Hawaii by next year. Fortunately Bachata seems to be doing all right. And Zouk and Zumba are waiting in the wings. So what do I know?
