Social Dance in the West Oahu
By Maria Kyong, Waimalo

The social dancers of West Oahu may not have an intricate knowledge of all the music for dancing. But they do have a good idea of sound and that requires some experience. They will accept that some syncopated music is fine for listening but for dancing not worth a hoot. Dance Music as with other types of music is rich in sentimental imagery. The melody expresses the mood of the music, the words add romance and excitement. And moving to good music can be a very enjoyable experience.

"Social Dancers like to dance only on days that begin with a "T" such as
Tuesday, Thursday, Today, Tomorrow, Thaturday and Thunday."

By making each dance adventure an emotional and physical experience, the dance takes on a new meaning and provides the social dancer with greater enjoyment. As we get older and more experienced we have less preference for this bang, bang, bang, one after another non stop kid stuff. A moment or two to socialize lets us savor our friendships. The newer DJs are on a learning curve and are getting better all the time. With live music you always get a break between songs that is never resented. And then, there is intermission, a few sips and nice conversation gives you real sociability.

The health advantages of social dance extend to improved outlook and mood. Go to a dance social of Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club and you can experience a more positive outlook on life in general. And with these people you will find dancing can be an excellent mood booster. Additionally, dancing increases blood flow to the brain, slowing down cognitive decline. All good things! If you’re considering giving dance a try, let these benefits inspire you to follow through with that goal. Try dance with any group and see how it benefits your life. You won’t regret it!
