Swing Dancing in Honolulu

We are getting some very good dancers on Oahu that regard themselves as Swing Dancers. And they even have their own independent Swing Dance Club Of Hawaii. Sounds just fine with me, and I am sure no one complains. What do they offer. I really don't know so I will guess. Swing, West Coast, - Single Time Lindy hop and East coast swing, also known as Jitterbug that originated in Harlem in the 1920's. There are several variations of East Coast Swing basically determined by the number of steps taken. Single time swing is faster than double or triple step swing and as a result dancers will take fewer steps.

"Social dancers know that one of the best byproducts of dancing as you progress
is the increased in self confidence."

The Swing Era began in earnest with Benny Goodman's triumphant Palomar Ballroom performance in California in August 1935. It was the music!  East coast swing, was typically danced to Big Band music in the Big Ballrooms of the 50's and 60's and consisted of  rock and roll classics. Lindy hop is a different variation of swing than East coast swing or Jitterbug but they are both danced to the same music. Typical East coast swing music is in the range of 135 to 155 beats per minute.

There are many dancers on Oahu that enjoy this and many can dance it very nicely in the Honolulu Night Clubs. Hawaii Jitterbugs, another dance club regularly at the Ong King Art Center. It can be danced to many other styles of music like blues, Motown or country western. Typical swing music is appreciate very well by a wide range of dancers, not only the swingers. The bands in Waikiki are very good at playing this kind of music and there seems to be an increase in the oldies but goodies. Which means an older more experience crowd.

Social dancers are aware that there is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness".
