Clubbing Around

Two of the hottest spots in Honolulu for nightlife and dancing are Addiction Nightclub and M Nightclub. Both venues offer classy and hip drinks, live acts, and nice fellow party goers. M is open till 4 a.m. and Addiction till 3:30 a.m., so you can't beat the hours anywhere else in town. If you're looking for a cowboy themed place drop into Nashville Waikiki wearing your finest cowboy or cowgirl hat. And there are a few dozen more intimate spots to have a good time. Most of these are for the younger under 40 crowd.

"Excellent dancers don't believe in excellence - only in
constant improvement and constant change."

For the more experience social dancers there is the traditional American Style of dance. And it is slightly modified by the Night Club dancers. But socially it is getting more standardize so both leads and follows can dance with each other easily specially here on Oahu. Fortunately we have on Oahu some of the best teachers of the American Style in the Pacific. It is pretty well divided into the Smooth and the Latin division. And what is American Smooth?

"Have I Told You Lately?" by Melveen Leed

American Smooth can be best described as a form of ballroom dancing with an enhanced repertoire of easy to perform, yet exciting steps. All basic principles and the technique of ballroom dancing still apply, however partners are not required to maintain a continuous body contact as in International Style of Dance. Not having the body contact restriction allows the dancers to perform steps such as: lady under arm turns, spins, side by side positions, parallel turns, dips, drops and other variations that would never be allowed in the International Style.

Anyone who is learning to dance will find American Smooth very easy to learn, yet refreshing due to its interesting, rich syllabus. The music used for American Smooth, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot is basically the same as that used for Ballroom as they know it in Europe, with the exception of quickstep, which is not danced in the American Smooth style. A similar dance is the Peabody which is making a comeback in some places in the US. I do not think I have seen it on our dance floors in this century.

Even Rhythm: A combination of steady consistent beats that are identical
to the meter and get the same time value. Merengue and Waltz?
