Better Blogging

Party and social dancing on Oahu is here to stay. Many different choices, and our best is in the various socials around the Island that are danced at District Parks or Community Centers. There are also very nice dance parties at the Studios, no hu hu. Remember when you were a kid and you thought adult life would be nothing but parties with your friends? Reality is quite the opposite. Responsibilities come in the way of partying every single time. So even if you take time out to meet up with your friends, some of them might not even show up. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun with the ones that are there. Adult social dance parties are the perfect place to meet new people and expand your social circle.

"Social dancing doesn’t require a certain level of ability, and making mistakes are understood and laughed off. Considered quite normal among our fellow dancers."

We are developing some very nice socials in West Oahu and fortunately many photos are being taken and posted in various social media. Learn to take plenty and learn to discard the worst. Forty % of the photos that are taken at a dance social are junk and those that are good, may be seen and appreciated only once. Not many dancers will ever want see them again. And everyone knows that there may be a bigger bunch tomorrow. The point is that we all capture way more photos than we did just a few years ago and the vast majority are either not good, or very very VERY similar to other images that may be much better. I am learning to delete and no more albums

"City Lights" by Loyal Gardner

From the photos that we capture from our personal family to just what we snap day to day on our mobile phones, can all add up to tens of thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of individual photos that may have to be sorted and stored somewhere…on an ongoing basis. When you’re taking photos, experiment with different poses and arrangements. Play with the zoom and the angle of the shot. Even minor adjustments can create an entirely different picture. The main reason of taking many pictures is that it will give you plenty to choose from. It’s always better to have more pictures than you need instead of having no good options because you didn’t take enough. Another benefit is that you get more practice this way, and you’ll train your eye to take better shots.

"There are many shining qualities in the minds of our dancing people, but there is none so useful as discretion - without it, learning is pedantry and wit impertinent."

Benevolent Oligarchies

There maybe 100 different dance organizations in Hawaii. The structure is pretty much the same as in the Mainland except that they have many more competition dances. The biggest group are the social dance clubs. The second are the Dance Studios and the third the Dance Night Clubs. Dance Studios and Dance Night Club are more business enterprises than the social clubs. Most decisions are made by the owners and the members are actually customers. They may have suggestions but the owners make the final decisions. The social dance clubs are "Benevolent Oligarchies" in which most of the power is held by a small group of people, "the elite."

“Social dancers believe that the same stream of life that runs through their veins night and day runs through the world and dances in rhythmic measures."

There are two other classes in a dance oligarchy, the AA class which is more involved in helping the elite to make every function a success - dance classes, dance socials and any other special dinner occasions. There is some interchange from this class to the elite, back and forth. The A class are members but more like a regular customers. They attend regularly and abide by the well known program and feel free to give an opinion now and then. If they say that you can't fight the oligarchy, they mean the leaders of such a place. The word may also refer to the few powerful people in charge of a large company or system.

Most small Dance Clubs here and on the Mainland have 5 to 7 percent of the membership in the Elite. The medium sized dance clubs at 10 to 15 percent of the membership. The more successful have over 20 percent, which is very good when you figure the second class at over 30 percent. More Democracy. The only trouble is that there is more susceptibility for a spin off into a new and separate club.  Remember the important thing is to Socialize. Socialize. Socialize.

"Social dancers believe that discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. The future you see is the future you get."

Oahu Thanksgiving

Most Thanksgiving Dance Parties will be over this weekend and just a few will be held next week. People will be planning to having Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends. All very well and good. The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621 almost four hundred years ago, This feast lasted three days and was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. There was no mention of illegal immigrants or white supremacy.

"Social dancers believe that where words leave off, music and dance begins.”

The holiday season is finally here — which means it's time for all things red, green, merry, and bright. And while we obviously adore Christmas and all it has to offer, it can sometimes be all too easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday preparations. Fortunately social dancers have many good choices.

"Hark, The Herald Angels Sing."

Nothing kicks off the holiday season quite like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. From boppin' elves to singing Christmas trees, the parade is one to watch—and definitely one to dance in. Every year, the famed Spirit of America Dance Star team performance gathers tons of dancers from high schools and studios from across the country. So what was it really like to dance in the parade last Year?

"Fly Me To The Moon" by Jimmy Borges

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
At this time of year, the air is filled with seasonal music. It’s light, bright and rich with the spirit of the Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. So if you’re organizing that holiday party and want your guests to do some social dancing. probably the most common music is Foxtrot. Social (or American) Foxtrot is very forgiving when it comes to music pacing, so you can dance to a great many tunes that might not work well for other dances. International-style Slow Foxtrot is significantly more limited because it only works comfortably within a strict range of timing values due to the technical precision required for this dance.

Thanksgiving Dance in Wahiawa

Nice day and I had enough to do. (very important when you are old.) My nurse from the VA. came in before noon and she sure knows what she is doing, She got all my physical data and will help me with more.  Then I had to do some work and then get ready for the Trip to Wahaiwa. The Handi Van was right on time, and having two others helped to minimize my guilty feelings of using it for my own personal use.

Got there too early but I will not complain, The Handi Van gets me there and gets me back home. The early birds were  Carol Mendoza,  Rod and Rosalie getting things ready for the dancers. Soon enough Leland and Maile got there with their equipment and it was starting to look good. In a few minutes,  more members were arriving with the goodies of food to share with our fellow dancers.

“If you hit a wall, climb over it, crawl under it, or dance on top of it.”

The Music set up and Leland sure knows what the people like in music. Getting a very good reputation. He knows. Classics from way back are acknowledged as something experienced dancers will love forever. Bachata seems to have been accepted very gracefully and the floor was getting heavy with dancers, The people are all friends and it shows. New people are welcome, of course..

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”
~ Confucius

The feed is simply the greatest because no one know the choices. I never know what Maile will put in my take home package. But it is always my best meal of the month. There is always plenty to eat and they make good use of the delicious leftovers. Completes the happy day for many. I got ready to leave before 9:30 and the Handi Van was only a few minutes late, fine by me. Got home a little after ten and had me a nice meal and I thank all the nice people at this party.

“The job of feet is walking, but their hobby is dancing.”

Social dancing is so much more than just grooving on the dance floor to your favorite tunes. In fact, you’ll be surprised how many benefits are associated with dancing. In the company of so many nice people, not only does it train your brain and your body’s motor skills but it also is an excellent exercise for your entire body. As such, it helps you to stay physically and mentally fit. Even more so, dancing regularly can improve your general well-being, boosts your self-esteem and has also been shown to improve your social skills. Thanksgiving is for good reason. Happy Dancing.

There are enough pictures for another blog.

Social Dancing

This is looking better all the time. We are getting more dancers in the Social Dance world and more dancers are beginning to understand the dance scene on Oahu. And we should respect those that are not Social Dancers as we are. We have accepted that the disciplines can no longer tell us what is "correct." They considered themselves dancers and they are right. The stricter ones profess to dance it "correctly," according to their style, in the beginning, last century, It was reasserted quite frequently, however by the time of the Palladium, they danced it "correctly" and omitted that it was according to their style. The implication was that by default, anyone not dancing their way was dancing "incorrectly."

"Social dancers believe that not all interpretations of a dance work of art are valid."

This contributed to the obsolescence of the style as many of their dances are becoming obsolete and being supplanted by fad dances. And this is heavily supported by the under thirty dancers as a rule. Sorry, in Night Clubs, no Waltz, Polka,Tango or Paso Doble. it is accepted and no one complains. We all know that many dancers of the American Tango or the International Tango can look you straight in the face and tell you that the Argentines do not know anything about dancing Tango. Yeah man.

They can look you straight in the face and tell you the Brazilians don't know about dancing Samba. However they can tell you how to do it "correctly." You believe in the tooth fairy too. I for one, do not accept their authority on what is "correct." We dance to very few variations because we enjoy moving to the music. There are just too many beautiful variations out there where people are really dancing not just some prescribed movements that may have been "incorrect" from the very beginning.

if we alienate anyone from the truth."

Dancing On Oahu Just Fine.

Well, it is pretty apparent that there will be a lot of action in downtown Honolulu for the Holiday Season. Why not? They have a perfect right to it. I guess it has always been that way. Sooner than we think, there will be big doings in the Central Valley, the Waianae Coast and the North Shore. This being tied to your masters in town is not da reel teeng. Many people in the West are slowly coming to the conclusion that there may be different styles of dance and Social Dance is our cup of tea.

"Social dancers know very well, that the types of social dances and
styles change with the times and we go with the flow."

There are those styles that are meant to be seen, competition or exhibition or theatrical purposes.  Let's face, they can look very nice and people still enjoy being an audience. They may be quite different from those that learn to dance for the pleasure of moving to music. And even that can differ according to the music. Country Dancing is a fine style, with its different ramifications, Waltz, line, two step etc and to their own preferred kind of music. They set up the correct ways of dancing their style to facilitate dancing with each other. Let us not knock it. Sounds all right to me.

"Maui Waltz" by Loyal Garner

Standardizing the steps for instance has for decades been done in all kinds of social dance. Facilitates the lead and follow for everyone. However you are not likely to find Salsa, Tango or Viennese Waltz danced in certain placces, it is accepted and no one complains. Salsa Dancing is also a fine style with its ramifications, Bachata, Merengue and Cha Cha Cha. They also set up the accepted ways of dancing their styles to facilitate dancing with each other. And with dance teachers being what they have always been, the steps get fancier and more difficult and are definitely getting more into the Gold level and beyond. Our dance blogs may eventually be read by all dancers in Hawaii.

Dancing on Oahu

From the Dance News
Ballroom dance refers collectively to a set of partner dances which originated in the Western world and are now enjoyed both socially and competitively around the globe. Its performance and entertainment aspects are also widely enjoyed on stage, in film, and on television. The term "ballroom dancing" is derived from the word ball, which in turn originates from the Latin word ballare which means "to dance". In times past, ballroom dancing was "social dancing" for the privileged, leaving "folk dancing" for the lower classes.

"Social dancers are definitely not for a phenomenological approach to dance.
Anybody know what that is?"

These boundaries have since become blurred, and it should be noted even in times long gone, many "ballroom" dances were really elevated folk dances. At present day the terminology and the dances are still in process of evolving. There may be a new name for the Competition dancing and Exhibition dancing both of which are meant to be seen. At any rate, for now, they seem to have seized the name Ballroom as applied to them. There had been an increasing audience of "Viewers" which has slowed down. And there is also the developing of a solid name for the Social type that is danced solely for recreation.

"Molokai Waltz" by Amy Hanaialii

Of course the Night Club people have a right to their opinions and we should listen to what they have to say. International is evolving into mostly competition dancing and there are many commercial spinoffs such as theatrical and acrobat dancing. All for show, to be seen, and definitely not to be done in the Social ballroom. American Style may develop into the Universal recreational dancing and be purely for the love of moving to music and accept basic dance movements. The term Ballroom may fade away in the distance.

New West

Yes, I don't get around much anymore, but I get some feedback and I read more blogs to stay in touch. I can still feel the idea that many residents in West Oahu do not like living in a bedroom community. They would welcome more Business Parks close to the residential area. They would be very pleased to live, work and play in their own Kuleana. A dance club and a night club would be icing on the cake. Maybe just a few more dancing places in the North Shore, Waianae and the Central Valley We are beginning to think about closer to home and as far away from the Rail Disaster as possible.

"Many social dancers believe that some day, social dancing
will be considered an evolving fine art."

Many residents are still stuck in long commutes, Gas use to be cheaper, and there was plenty of time, but not any more. Salt Lake could also get many dancers from Kalihi and environs. Social dancing has already been dragged, kicking and screaming into the vast Western wilderness of Oahu. Town is too much traffic and it is going to get worse. I haven't been much help. The worsening bus situation (to pay for the Rail Crisis) has made it difficult for me. Though I do have the Handi Van, not perfect but I can't complain. So I attend dance functions, only when I am invited and I can blog'em. For the other blogs, I can wait for the Two-Centers that will eventually appear to save the day. Wherever, if I can help, I will.

"Walk Through Paradise" by Melveen Leed

If you have a nice pattern of good steps and moves which you think look nice, you are probably right. However there is a suggestion here too. Each move should be done sparingly, "One is fun — Two will do — Three, let it be — Four, it's a bore." Got it? Times are a-changing and everything changes except change. Our communication with our fellow dancers in this century is far different. What ever happened to the newsletters? It just keeps changing and we must all go along as best we can.

it could be that we speak kindly of others."

LAGs

By Josephine Cabanay, Kailua
Variations Are Definitely Not For Beginners
It definitely takes time for beginners to master basic techniques in social dancing. And fortunately most understand the fun they can have in just learning the basics. Ask any line dancer, the thrill is in moving to the music and getting the max in pleasure from doing so. Beginners could understand that nothing can happen overnight and dancing is no different. Basic techniques and steps are not necessarily boring. Top class professional dancers can still look beautiful just dancing the basic techniques and steps. And they can also fully enjoy the movements to the music, especially if the music is among their favorites.

"Social dancers believe that one of the best byproducts of dancing
is an increase in their self confidence."

Aye, there's the rub. Most videos show good examples of basic figures danced with style. So beginners must not be too greedy to jump into variations before they understand how they are developed from the basic figures. They can still look good when they dance the basic syllabus figures well. Variations are also better danced with a fixed partner as both dancers must understand how the variations are transformed from the original basic style. LAGS: The Latest And Greatest Syndrome can be understood very easily. It is just a quiet collusion between the dancers and the teachers. The good students want to look like terrific exhibition dancers immediately if not sooner.

"I Will Dance For You" by Willie K

The teachers have the opportunity to show the students an sample of their vast repertoire and it fits in very nicely. This is not an unnatural function. The malfunction occurs when the dancers gets very good in LAGS and then they tend look upon their fellow dancers as "lower class." We can be happy just being social dancers. And many of their pronouncements have the sound of being engraved on stone. Then they/we know that they have made "the decision" and we have lost them. These are all part of the adjustments we must make and accept, no hu hu. We remain Social Dancers.

“If you can speak what you will never hear, if you can write
what you will never read, you have done rare things
