The Dalia Lama

Part received in my Tweeter and I lost the second page with two final paragraphs. But anyway, we can all know the entire world is aware. Trump doesn't know yet unless he can make Big Bucks.

Trump has become aware that Easter is too early to proclaim victory over the Trump Plague. Meanwhile they are sure setting up some Big Bucks for Big Pharma. Everything has doubled in price. Trump says you got two choices - You can take it or leave it. These people are all heart.

We have to get something in these blogs on what the dance community is doing. Most are for the PEOPLE, and not for the MONEY. We are losing hits on our blogs. You got something to share with our fellow dancers? Email it and I will post it. No anonymous, but pen names permitted.

International

After WWI. a few groups in England got together and established what is now known as the International style of dance.with two categories: Standard – which includes the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz, and Latin– which includes Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive, and Paso Doble. It has been an influence on an established English style, not a derivation. The International style was established at the time when the sun never set on the British Empire. It was not simply descriptive, but also prescriptive, largely and primarily in the interests of the English dance teachers involved.

"Social dancers believe that dancing is a fun way to exercise, though
it may be disregarded by those who argue they can’t dance.
Face it, anybody can feel good moving to music."

The British established a power base formed by having organized the first extensive dance competition system which they exported around the British Empire and much of the rest of the world. They then created, for example, a Viennese Waltz with virtually no steps in it (over the strong objections of the Viennese masters, as I understand), To this day, the world over, the Viennese Waltz is the one danced in Vienna. They also developed a Slow "English" Waltz with an extensive syllabus. They created Jive, definitely not Latin and based on an American dance, and wonder why Americans don't conform to their "descriptions."

"Maui Waltz" by Loyal Garner

They created Tango, which is quite different from the Argentine version it was supposed to be based on. The rest of the Latin dances are even worst off. They created Rumba and got the basic step correctly. Their Cha Cha Cha is a bit off but generally well liked for all the right reasons. Samba is way off with way too many basic steps, in effect different dances. The Paso Doble is not Latin. Originally from France went into Spain and evolve into a Bullfighter dance. And yet International has been the biggest influence World Wide of the Ballroom Dances.

Opinions Needed

Blogging is now more than 25 years old. It took off in the 90s with the development of consumer broadband in Europe and the US. It is now also all over the world. In our dance circles it was  overlooked in the beginning mainly because of the Web Sites which had the bulk of the readers. There was also a renewed interest in ordinary newspaper and magazine advertising, newsletters and of course, radio and television advertising.

"Social dancers believe that socializing is ever more important as we age. Partner dancing enables us to grow our circle of friends whether we have a steady partner or not."

Blogging has persisted and by now it is understood to be the dominant form of media all over the world. I have sought out the opinion of respected bloggers throughout the internet. I specifically wanted to know about the future of blogging and the benefits people experienced from blogging. The results have been quite varied. The business of blogging involves learning, professional and personal development, networking and profile. Our biggest need is the opinions of our varied readers. Those willing to share those valued opinions with their fellow dancers.

For now the Micros are getting quite a few fans. Facebook and Twitter leading. But those are international things. Ours our mostly local island scene and some overflows to the neighbor islands. It is still evolving but for those individuals and organizations that are prepared to invest the effort it has a strong future.  Ours are very simple blogs and I have shared my findings with our dance blog readers regularly. And giving them the information by the spoonful and not the entire bowl. That is why the importance of the Two Centers and eventually the Guest Authors. But for those interested in more detail and expanse they can find it easily on the Internet.

but in the end, there it is."

Ballroom Dancing in the US

Arthur Murray was an American ballroom dancer and businessman, whose name is most often associated with the dance studio chain that bears his name. He was born:1895, in the Ukraine
and he died, March 3, 1991 in Honolulu. He was in the dance business after WWI. and his business expanded more widely in 1938, when an Arthur Murray dance studio franchise was opened in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Others followed. His slogan was: "If you can walk, we teach you how to dance", and the company guaranteed that the pupils learn to dance in ten lessons. After WWII, Murray's business grew with the rise of interest in Latin dance, and he regularly taught and broadcast in Cuba in the 1950s.

"Social dancing is as integral to human life as music.
It fosters self-expression and lifts the spirit."

However Fred Astaire began his studios in 1947 and he used the same Rumba basic square step of Arthur Murray, Slow, Quick, Quick, which is still being taught on Oahu. Arthur did not like that, he had invented it. He took him to the Courts and he won. (what do the judges know about dancing?) So Fred Astaire changed his square step to Quick, Quick, Slow and got away with it. To this day that is the way it is taught in the Fred Astaire dance studios. If we get a Fred Astaire studio on Oahu, they will use Quick, Quick, Slow. And they both teach American Style of Dance. I think. Would be a mess except that there an "alternate" basic already on the mainland that resembles the International basic.

"A Song For You" by Jimmy Borges

At any rate the Arthur Murray faction will teach their dances according to their syllabi. The Fred Astaire faction will teach their dances according to their syllabi. And the Internationals will do the same, teach it according their syllabi. The Social Dancers will dance the entire enchilada their way. Just to enjoy moving to their favorite music. Which brings up the subject of the "Oldies But Goodies." Wha dat mean?

"Social dancers know that most of the important things in the world
have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying
when there seemed to be no hope at all"

Dancing Began.

The history of dance is difficult because dance does not often leave many solid things to see. It is not possible to identify with exact precision when dance became part of human culture. We think it began soon after agriculture some 10000 years back.We have the first archeological recording of dance from 9000 year old cave paintings found in India. And Mexican Civilizations have recorded the beginnings of professional music and dance about 6000 years back. Ancient Egyptians used dancing for both entertainment and religion about 5000 years ago

"Social dancers are some of the most welcoming,
supportive people on the dance floors of Oahu."

Dancing spread through most of the world including the natives of the Americas  However, in Europe, the "Dark Ages" came in as a historical period that asserted a demographic, cultural, and economic deterioration that occurred in Western Europe following the decline of the Roman Empire.from 500 to 1500 AD and where there was not much doing. The Renaissance awakened everyone and the Volta, a 3 count peasant dance evolved into the high class Viennese Waltz and the first ballroom dance ever created, - in the mid 1800s. The Milonga in Peru 1500s evolved into the Tango of 1800s, in Argentina and Uruguay.

"Pearly Shells" by Don Ho

The Rumba, in the Caribbean and the Samba, Brazil in the 1800s. The music developed rapidly in the new Americas. The Merengue, 1850s and many other fad dances. The Fox Trot eased it's way in the US 1910, Swing dances solid in 30s and 40s, the Salsa and the Mambo in the forties. The Cha Cha Cha, came in as a smash hit in 1950s  Break dancing originated in the south Bronx, New York, in the late 1970s and there have been dozens of fad dances that have come and gone. Though with all the hype in modern day communication they last longer.

a second chance. It is called tomorrow."

Torso, Knees and Feet

By Jim Cane, Retired Dance Instructor, Pupukea
You sit and wonder why you don't have the extra oomph in your dancing. You observe dancers floating through space and time and they stand out like a sore thumb on the dance floor. It is not their collection of step variations. These skilled dancers appear to be floating, by moving their bodies first, in advance of their feet movement. Floating the body is what dancing is all about not the steps. Move your body easily without bumps before your feet move.

"Social dancers think that some days they have to create their own sunshine.
When the need is something to believe in, start with yourself."

You must involve your torso, knees and feet. From a standing position allow your knees to sway forward (whether moving forward or backward) then let your body move, then your legs join the action. Repeat from the next leg etc. Flexing the knees contribute to a softer action. Try it! When moving backward you must keep your body up toward the person moving forward and as you feel the light pressure of the forward movement, travel back with it.

"Molokai Waltz" by Amy Hanaialii

Don't put your body away or don't resist so much that you feel like a brick wall. If the backward travel was expected correctly, the body should travel vertically from the original position and will again be settled comfortably over the feet without any strain or contortion of the body in transition. Applying these techniques, not hard study, just having fun doing it over and over again, You will come to understand the basics of all movement and become a smoother dancer, a real social dancer.

The North Shore

For the social dance fans on Oahu interested in dance information try, Dance Fever Oahu web site and any of Frank's Blogs. They have much good and interesting information that is unavailable to me. And for you beginners out there, yes, you can learn to dance by just dancing and enjoying the movement to music. Of course, most of us know you can also learn to live by just living and enjoy life in the easiest way.The principles are the same.

"Young social dancers are well aware that they can meet
a new romantic interest on the dance floor."

Not in these Trump Plague times of course but when it is acceptable, visit Haleiwa on the North Shore. We have mentioned Haleiwa several times in this blog and we recommend you stick around and enjoy everything this little town has to offer. Relatively close by for us living in Mililani, the town is full of unique shops and boutiques and bristling with fantastic places that serve up some amazing food. You’ll pick up on the town’s relaxed, surfer vibes straight away, and you won’t be able to help yourself but to unwind and chill like the locals.

The northern hemisphere winter months on the North Shore see a concentration of surfing activity, taking advantage of swells originating in the stormy North Pacific. Notable surfing spots include Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach. The spot of Ehukai Beach, commonly known as the Banzai Pipeline, is the most notable surfing spot on the North Shore, and is considered a prime spot for competitions due to its close proximity to the beach, giving spectators, judges, and photographers a great view. The North Shore is considered to be the surfing mecca of the world. Every December, the area hosts three competitions, which make up the Triple Crown of Surfing.

Dance Fusion

Fusion Dancing became specially true in the Latin Dances over a century ago. In the US, Latin dancing was taken over and reprocessed by the professionals in the US, and many dances went into oblivion. Fortunately many of the basics remain. Rumba evolved in the Caribbean into a fusion with the Spanish bolero. The local Rumba in Cuba had been danced fast, and the newly arrived Spanish bolero was slow. The new fused "Son" at midways in speed emerged and the old Rumba was relegated back to the sticks.

"Social Dancers believe that a simple definition might be that
social dances are not usually complicated.

What was exported was not the "Rumba" but the Son. Fusion, change and interpretation were different all over in the US. A good example was the Rumba basic step. The original Caribbean was the rock step and a slow step in the Indian style and used throughout the Caribbean in many dances, the Calypso, Beguine, Montuno etc. Also the slow step was done with a two count Toe, Heel, very predominant move in North American Indian dancing. Instead of just stomping down, they toed on one count and the full foot on the next count.

"My Molokai" by Willie K

The English picked up on the rock step but most everything else was designed for the European dancers. In the US. Arthur Murray. having the advantage of knowing more about dancing than anyone, did not like the rock step, specially because it began on the two count. And for sure those heathens did not know anything about dancing. So for the American audience he designed the basic square step, Slow, Quick, Quick that began on the one count. And it is still taught in all the Arthur Murray studios including Oahu.

Pandemic, last part.

Received from Richard Takahata:

Testing and testing methods are subject to human errors and mistakes, which only favors the virus, and makes our problems much worst. People tested false negative, get a free pass out of jail/quarantine and get to run out free to only to infect more people, before they finally feel truly ill - too late for everyone else that got infected. Thats a way you get community spreading here in Hawaii and in many other places, and why all these closures could last longer and longer - till get it right, or we finally get a vaccine, in two years?

China News - they claim that new COVID19 cases stopped weeks ago at 80K+, and is impossible to verify. Their previous curve of new cases would have them at over several millions of cases by now and still growing - not what their Glorious and Beloved leader wants the world to know - that COVID19 is winning in China. Unfortunately, we started a month late in this country and COVID 19 is now in all 50 states and getting more firmly entrenched. The death rate will continue to rise in spite of Trump stating that the Trump Plague has been contained. May God help us all.

Yes, and here's why... ( warning - contains opinions as well as facts, which are subject to verification)

- without a vaccine, all of the other choices are bad and get far far worst and costlier, the longer we delay taking correct actions - emphasis on CORRECT, because the virus doesn't give second chances if you get it wrong the first time. Once its in control, you don't get another chance to get it right - very unforgiving.

Non-pharmaceutical Interventions - NPIs
social distancing
self-isolation
cancel gatherings
close schools
testing* Testing, TESTING - share this information quickly and accurately

From the video - this analyses shows what NPI options our leaders have for dealing with COVID19 - it reflects estimates of how many cases/deaths could occur for the social-economic benefits gained by various combinations of NPIs they choose - they and all other world leaders are gambling with lives

Here are the various "bets" and their estimated outcomes in case/death growth.

With no vaccine, you can either have more cases and people die now to rapidly achieve herd immunity or completely isolate and contain for fewer deaths now and use a vaccine for immunity much later - leaders and countries are choosing between bad and worst choices - there are no good choices left ... its TOO LATE

0317201441.jpg

So how long will this take? - While the disease is in control, isolation and lockdowns will take as long as needed to get to a vaccine, or by achieving natural herd immunity by having the majority of us catch the disease and either recover or some die from it.

Wearing a mask and eye protection offers some protection, if you have to go outside for essential tasks and avoid the disease, and then keep up with NPIs till you can get vaccinated - if you can last that long. And then there are lots of other bad choices to deal with - massive social/economic disruptions, high unemployment, mounting bankruptcies, costs going up and up, huge bailouts to failing companies, more quarantines, delays and more delays in everyday life - higher and higher stresses that can kill you too.

Having a clearer understanding of what is driving the future of all our lives will help you to be better prepared and not so stressed out. Why I started doing that several weeks ago to help us prepare for this day.

Pandemic Update

From: Richard Takahata <godancing.wbdc@gmail.com>
Date: Thu, Mar 19, 2020 at 7:11 AM
Subject: Fwd: MTA News

To: WBDC Board

Looking at the recent actions taken by the Mililani Town Associations (MTA) Board of directors for how they have been reacting to the COVID19 crises can demonstrate the level of openess and transparency they are using to reach their membership of over 17,000 households. It can demonstrate the level of professionalism and the depth of resources they have in analysing and evaluating the situation and the long term plan of actions needed. Its useful to compare this to what the city and other organizations are doing and to take and adapt the best of those ideas to use for our own community.

Understanding why is an important to gaining valuable insights into not only taking actions today, but for planning and preparing for the future. Attached is the rest of the discussions that help you to understand both why and how long this crises could last, and what those plans and actions could be...

That forward look is based on only what we know today, and can change constantly with new information and analyses. A well known fact about viruses is that they can mutate and change - into either beneign/safer or much more dangerous forms - thats what could happen later in the fall and into winter, have more consequences.

The bigger picture is that what we try to do at the level of WBDC is teaching us also about what to do for the other parts of our life, family and community - its a two way street with information and lessons learn flowing each way to make our lives better.

Everything is connected, until you to decide to break some connections for valid reasons - thats happening throughout the world now, in order to control the spread of COVID19.

Richard

PS - go back and recall my first letter to you all on 2/25/20, when I first started to bring this matter to your attention - I was serious and sincere back then, and am more serious than ever now...

they will surely watch them die a slow death in front of them."

Moving Right Along

There has always been dancing in Honolulu and when Aiea Ballroom had it's first spinoff it was HBDA in Honolulu. And there have been dozens of other groups of people with their own idea of what a good dancing group should be. It has always been social dancing but there there has always been that slightly different viewpoint in handling the entire scene.  It continues to differ, all from each other and.Ballroom has had a mixed history. It has always felt that it was simply on a more elevated status than  just being a "street dancer." Learning the American Style of dance has been beneficial, overall, for the social, recreational dancers.

"Social dancers do make the effort to be polite and
thank their dance partner after the dance."

Now in the last few decades we had a huge influx of Latin fad dances, Lambada, Reggaeton and Macarena came and went, - nice but not the Da Reel Teeng. We now have a mixed terminology and hoping for the best for all.Salsa, Bachata, Merengue. Social dancers have also set up the accepted ways of dancing their styles to facilitate dancing with each other. And with dance teachers being what they have always been, the steps get fancier and more difficult and are definitely getting more into the Gold level and beyond. This contributes to the obsolescence of the style and is eventually supplanted by another dance.

"Hanalei Moon" by Loyal Garner

But these are the under thirty dancers as a rule. Sorry, no Waltz, Polka or Tango here either, it is accepted and no one complains. Then we have the International clubs, that have as their agenda the promotion of the International style of dance. They profess to dance it "correctly," and it is reasserted quite frequently. I have never heard anyone say that they dance it "correctly" according to their style. The implication is that by default, anyone not dancing their way is dancing "incorrectly." The height of arrogance.

"Stay Safe, let us remember that life gives no guarantees. It is uncertain and unpredictable.
It becomes our duty to make the most of each day for everyone. Stay Safe."

Da Mayor

Received from Richard Takahata:

On Monday, 3/16, the Mayor closed all city meeting and recreational facilities to indoor activities, which include ballroom dancing till May. WBDC will not be able to hold any events at Wahiawa Rec Center till then.

As the PANDEMIC develops, its highly likely this closure will continue and applies to other organizations and community places for meetings. The Mililani Town Association and various churches are examples where that has also happened.

Sunlight contains UV radiation which naturally inactivates viruses, so being outdoors in purified fresh air is safer for activities. Continue to social distancing, self isolation, and stay home till the danger passes.

Richard

PS - masks - wearing one offers some protection by reducing a virus dose that hits you all at once - like someone coughing near you. Small doses or virus are more easily handled by your body, than massive doses. That can buy you time before the infection peak hits you. You will naturally develop immunity about a week after the fever passes - unless you have other pre-exisiting conditions that don't allow you to develop a strong immune response. In really severe cases, some persons could could suffer long term lung damage and reduction of lung function after you recover - you'll be short breath more easily with even normal activities. That weaken state could subject you to more frequent illnesses.

“Social dancers know, that somehow, when it is dark enough,
we can see the stars and we still have hope.”

Minimum wage people do not invest their money. They can buy food, and who gets the money? The food people and what do they do with their money? They get to pay their bills too.Very few will invest it. Minimum wage people buy clothes and who gets the money? Same thing. The Clothing people and very few will invest it. They pay their rent and somebody gets the money and a few will invest it. It will eventually get to the top but we have done something for the economy and our fellow humans on this earth. Trickle Up Theory?

No, we don't know
Social Club, Dance Studios, Night Clubs, must prepare their businesses. All dance officers and business owners should be aware of the ramifications of Covid 19 on dancing, with information about everything from, from closing, to sick leave to sanitizing your space. The simplest thing to do immediately is just shutting down to the end of the month. You will have time to study the situation with much more correct information. And then make better decisions.

Social dancers believe that Hope is that little voice you hear whisper
"Maybe" when it seems like the whole world is saying "No."
