Wake Up Rerun #60

Starting from Mahaha, I have been neglecting them too long, because there has not been much doing, or I should say it is quiet. If I develop flyers that’s the place to begin the distribution. Waianae shows some promise with Salsa. Most of Waianae is accustomed to rolling up the sidewalks after sundown. The changes will come slowly. Some places are staying open until 11:00 pm. Don’t push.

"Not everything that counts can be counted,
and not everything that can be counted counts."

Waianae District Park is still looking good with the best dance floor in the West. People hesitate to move to Waianae for many reasons but the biggest of course. is no place to find work. We live in Paradise but we are forced to work in Honolulu and buy from Honolulu.

We will have a true paradise when we can live and work and play and buy what we need right here on the Coast, we are just this side of heaven. And, "I coulda been home in 20 minutes." is common here.

"Crazy" by Melveen Leed

And we shall dance in the streets.

But the Rail Party and their big bucks in profits make it going to town terrible. The "Cattle Cars" on the Waianae Coast are about the worse ones in the US.

The Rail Party backers do not have a clue, that you will never get people off their cars and onto public transportation, that way. The users are all aware that the Rail Disaster is the cause of it all.

What did the ocean say to the beach? Nothing, it just waved!

But the funding for public buildings is still slow and at this moment that is all there is for us. We must be patient. Some people are becoming aware and that is the most we can ask for at that moment. There will be others that will see the possibilities and do something about it.

They are picking up on dancing in Waianae. Sign on
Body Repair Shop. "May we have the next dents?"

Sea Country, also known as Maili looks very nice. Not much in Shopping but some of the best and most beautiful beach parks on any coast. Plenty of valley behind them for a nice industrial park.

Nanakuli is much livelier for some reason, perhaps because I live here. I have even witnessed, "ladies of the night" strolling at midnight. And Sack & Save closes at eleven, nice. Hey, we are nice people, only one thing wrong, they think I am selling something. I have to go all the way to Waianae to give something away.

Pub's Side Note: A dance blog is what all "dance websites would like to be" updated on a regular basis, containing content that is of interest to a select or target audience. Information easy to update and change. Our readers are gradually picking up on this action.

Music Research on USB Rerun #59

Most social dancers dance to the music and the music is first. For some the movements in the dance are what count and the music though not immaterial is not first. For me the music is first and most interesting. I cannot get around much anymore so I am hoping to get Calvin and Richie to help me distribute these USB drives and maybe they can help find the proper recipients.

"Good-byes are just the start to Hellos. In short, leave the past
in the past and say hello to a new beginning."

When I was in Nicaragua, most of our music was local Indian music and almost forty years later I came across a beauty, "Y Volvere" on the Internet. I copied and got it to Calvin, who in turn informed me of some thing similar in Carlos Santana. Sounded interesting and I began my research.

There are five separate videos for the song "Y Volvere" (I will return.) all on a USB thumb drive.

The first one I found (black & white) was the original composed and sung by Alain Barriere in French. Born in 1935, he wrote "Importe Moi" in 1968 and the music was nice. He was happy go lucky and made a nice living just by singing, writing his songs and being appreciated by his growing audience. It was wine, women and song but he finally married at the age of 40 in 1975.

The second version is by Carlos Santana and he plays it in his usual style, when he was the rage. Terrific guitar naturally, a lot of the main tune but also around it, over it, under it and his own sounds. Long enough though almost ten minutes.

Then in the 70s, (Third versions, black & white) the song got to South America and specially to a bunch of Indians from Chile. They had taken the name of their band from the bible, the Black Angels, In Spanish, Los Angeles Negros. Big Mistake in the US where no one was interest in latin music from the blacks in L. A. Germain de la Fuente, wrote the words in Spanish, was the leader, arranger and lead singer of the band. He spiced up the music and it was a smash hit through out South America. They eventually went all the way up to the US.

I found another video (black & white) of another Chilean group "Los Bunkers" (Fourth Version) and they had their own thing which was also very good, except that they had to have their hair in the their face. And they went all the way up to Mexico with it. This video I got was in Managua somewhere, dates and places very difficult to get.

The fifth version two decades later in Mexico, a younger group picks up on this classic with Lucero and Mariachis. People tell her she looks more beautiful without the hat. I must be prejudiced, I think she looks just as beautiful with the hat on. Real Indian style and a big success in Mexico, really turns the song into a real classic that will remain for at least another hundred years.

I have all videos on a USB promotional thumb drive from Town Dancer. If you want it, you should have good speakers on your computer or good earphones. The music comes out the same everywhere but with cheap speakers you get cheap sounds. Sorry. Send name and address and you can have it, I will mail it to you.

Dance Studio Night Club Rerun #58

Yes, I know there is no such thing in Hawaii and not very many have heard about it either. It is a new concept that started in Florida is now creeping up the Atlantic Coast on the Mainland.

Studio Inc. a NightClub in Tampa, Florida Is a 12,000+ sq. ft. Dance Club with 3 rooms 4 full Bars. Ladies 18 & up, Guys 21 & up. Open 4 Days a week Thursday(reggaeton), Friday(hip-hop), Saturday(latin), Sunday(tropical), The entire affair is mostly for the under 30, nice young people.

"Blue Champagne" by Jimmy Dorsey

Apparently the action is mostly on weekends. At some places on the Atlantic coast, the night clubs are only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the week is Dance Studio action. Some have even introduced Juice Bars. God forbid! That's blasphemy!

If it happens in Hawaii, and some of our studios are phasing in that direction, it will be somewhere on the Leeward Coast. And my own personal guess is that it will be somewhere between Kalealoa Harbor and Kalealoa Airport. That area is perking up very nicely. And odd that the population is over 50% haole.

"I'll Remember You" by Don Ho

Just think of all the lucky people that could live, work and play in their own kuleana. Paradise could be very near. Honolulu, we could visit every couple years, why not? Meanwhile we are going to have a ball where we live. Kapolei will be for sure Second City. Third City is still up for grabs, Waianae or the North Shore.

Just Rolling Along Rerun #57

I have made mistakes setting up my social media marketing strategy but I am learning to integrate it with other digital assets. I had tried to integrate with Web sites but most have made it plain that they are not interested. And just lately, I have begun to use the Micros to increase contact with the readers and possible guest authors of the blogs. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, My Space and Google+.

"Shave Ice" by Loyal Garner

Dance Waianae seems to be coming out very slowly. Not only should the accounts be linked together through the links but they should also be directly tied to emails and Micros. Not connecting these accounts reduces the amount of reach each asset has separately. The other blogs are doing quite well. And I just got the list of the top blogs in Hawaii according to monthly visitors. I think most of them are professional Bloggers and they cost money for what they are doing.

"If you are going through hell - keep going, you'll come out it."

Then we surely can take a look see at what is happening in our town blogs, since we are destined to see less of town in the future. The Rail Catastrophe clinched it. And lucky we have a few blogs in town telling us what's happening. The latest is Calvin's review of the Anniversary Ball of Ilima Dance Club in the Town Dancer blog. Coupled with photos by Jackson Cho, that is a blog that will be seen in the entire Pacific Rim.

Housing for the homeless on the Waianae Coast?

Meanwhile in Waianae, the bus situation seem to be improving which will not last long. It will be one horrible mess when the Rail Disaster is installed. Makaha to downtown will take at least three hours. You can make it now on the #93 bus in an hour and a half. And I can get it right around the corner. How is that for "Rapid Transit?" Biggest Con Job in the Pacific in a couple centuries.

Just Wait! Rerun #56

All we can do now is wait and hope that those lying Polls were not believed and the truth shall set us free.

"How High The Moon"   ...   Les Paul and Mary Ford

Richie doing a good job in keeping the dance scene alive and interesting for us. He has a good blog in Town Dancer and another in Oahu And Beyond. Check them out and get the latest scoop. I hope all the people involved in these dancing scenes appreciate his efforts. We need more like him. Not clones just their own honest opinions. That is what makes a blog, and it becomes social media.

"My Way"   ...   Frank Sinatra

A drummer, tired from being ridiculed by his peers, decides to learn how to play some "real" musical instruments. He goes to a music store, walks in, approaches the store clerk, and says "I'll take that red trumpet over there and that accordion."
The store clerk looks at him a bit funny, and replies "OK, you can have the fire extinguisher but the radiator's got to stay".

"Cathy's Clown"   ...   Everly Brothers

by John Prichett
And The Star Advertiser in now learning, they got on the wrong side of the rail and leaned too far. So they are losing more than that. They are consistently wrong in their polls that end up favoring their viewpoints.

Other news publications are coming to the forefront. Honolulu Weekly, Midweek, Honolulu Civic Beat and Hawaii Reporter. These new publications are giving us Da Reel Teeng, not that warmed over crap they think we deserve. Bye Bye newspaper.

Dancing Social Media Rerun #55

So far I haven't found the guide. So I am working on my own which of course is highly prejudiced if I am the only one making the conclusion. Apparently Dance Social media is a very social interaction among dancers in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and a network of blogs.

"Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do.
You can go as far as your mind lets you. You can believe,
you can remember - you can achieve."

You are invited

Furthermore, dance social media depends on mobile and internet-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. It is world wide and not limited to any one language.

They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between organizations, communities, and individuals and in Hawaii seems to be mostly in the desktop computer environment. It is mostly individual and organizations are mentioned but as only part and parcel of the dance environment.

Dance social media differs from traditional or industrial media, (Newsletters, Web sites and ordinary advertising) in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy, and permanence. The traditional media is also addressed "to whom it may concern."

"The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" by Les Paul and Mary Ford

There are many effects that stem from internet usage. According to Nielsen, internet users continue to spend more time with social media sites than any other type of site. The results are shown clearly in our hit counters.

Photos, Everybody Knows. Rerun #54

Digital cameras are now ubiquitous, every body has got one. It is estimated that 2.5 billion people in the world today have a digital camera. If the average person snaps 25 photos this year that would be a staggering 400 billion photos. And yet there are some blogs on Oahu that would like to get just one photo and - No can. - Hint.

"A person is rich in proportion to the number of things
they can afford to let alone."

That might sound implausible but this year people will upload over 70 billion photos to Facebook alone. And it is very probable that there will be over one billion photos uploaded daily to the various micros promoting photos. Already Facebook’s photo collection has a staggering 150 billion photos, that’s over 10,000 times larger than the Library of Congress. That last photo you forgot to email. Somebody missed it? Heh Heh.

"Tiny Bubbles" by Don Ho

Even accounting for population growth the exponential growth of photos is incredible. We now take 4 times as many photos as 10 years ago. Today every party, birthday, sports game and concert is documented in rich detail. The combination of all these photos is a rich portrait of today and that could be included in the blogs of Oahu. Would be nice for all of us.

A Social Study Rerun #53

By Ralph Wilson, Tampa, Florida
The Tampa Dance News.

Looking over the dance clubs in this part of the State we can see the similarity of how they are run. Most people are reluctant to run for office so they sometimes get people that acquiesce to anything and they become the De Jure government.

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can do - start to do it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

The De Facto government remains in the clique of gossipers in the club with a basis of a "goat social structure," because there are not enough men to go around. At any rate, these groups can be deadly for the clubs and the membership. Fortunately many clubs are shaping up for the better. The failure of our leadership, the smallness of our politics, the ease with which we are distracted by the petty and trivial, our chronic avoidance of tough decisions, our preference for scoring cheap political points instead of rolling up our sleeves and building a working consensus to tackle our big problems have been all there.

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones

We have the opportunity today to face the challenges of this millennium together as dancers and not to quibble about who belongs to what club or does what discipline. We must learn to disagree without being disagreeable and that it is possible to compromise without compromising your principles. We should be willing to listen to each other and learn to assume the best of people instead of the worst.

"Where Did Our Love Go?"
by the Supremes

At a time when a world is dancing more, more new clubs will be coming in and many of our local clubs will be losing members. Some start off fast and then begin to get infiltrated with the cliques and taper off. In the attempt to seem democratic they defeat their own purposes and few will do anything for the club.

Everything is clear and the decision as to which part the member would like to be in, should be up to the member and we should respect it. The results should make everyone happy. There could be a maximum size which gives the greatest efficiency. The independent club at about 400 seems more like it but we don't know for sure. All volunteer officers, with only a few perks open and everything above board including any subsidies.

And with all the clubs being friends, the opportunity is there for these clubs to cooperate for any really big occasion. The location is not that important, and it does not have to be concentrated in the centers of big cities. ****

Not much news Rerun #52

This blog is slowly going down again and I expect Blogging Hawaii to take it's place, All that Blogging Hawaii needs is some comments, and a few good Two Centers. The average hits per day would surpass Town Dancer. I am the only one blogging on Town Dancers so it stands to reason.

"All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward."

Not only Blogging Hawaii but in the West, Platinum Horseshoe is moving ahead very nicely and the same thing applies there as in all the blogs. The Comments, Two Centers and the Guest Authors. Then you have real Social Media and we don't got it on Oahu yet. Where?

"Shave Ice" by Loyal Garner

Facebook is still tricky. They still have me on their records but they want to Mickey Mouse me around some way and I am not going to stand for that. They will get 350 million photos today. That is not counting 350 million from yesterday or 350 million from tomorrow. Somebody in South Africa missed one of yours. Ha!

"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Bruddah Iz

With us it is easy and we are not into photo albums. But our photos are for our people and they are our friends, neighbors, relatives and fellow dancers on the island of Oahu. That is Social Media. Everyone has to judge for themselves and we are all different with different viewpoints. We do not expect clones, and some will have four pics and some will have 40. OK, so we are different, no hu hu.

Dance is moving to music. Rerun #49

On the Mainland they now have The Exercise To Music Instructor Certificate.  The course is jam packed with the latest choreography and training techniques so that anyone can teach these, fun and exciting group exercise classes to all ability levels.

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around
once in a while, you could miss something."

Anyone can gain all the practical skills and confidence they  need to plan and teach group exercise classes. They will learn how to add choreography to your routines allowing you to add creativity to your classes, meaning your customers are never bored of their routines. From there it is just a skip and a jump to line dancing just for fun.

"Tiny Bubbles" by Don Ho

This can be fun like ballroom, line, swing or tango dancing. As long as you are moving to your preferred music it will be enjoyable. There are some fitness centers from Kaimuki to Enchanted Lake. They all have exercising to music and you never need a partner. That is where social dancing comes in. What is social dancing. Aha!

Of course, you may want to get more information which is natural and you have much information in our blogs. You can check in on Richie Fun blogging in Dancing Nights blog. A very good example of communication with our friends. And clones we do not need, just an honest opinion. You can also check in on Dance Fever Oahu, a web site and Frank has two blogs on dancing both of which have information that is not available to us.

Blog Sites Like Ours Rerun #48

If Web sites are the Magazines, then Blog Sites are the daily newspapers and most Dance blog sites simply just furnish information and a photo or two about dancing. The truth is that a blog is hardly the place where you would want to reach for your credit card. However, blogs rely on fresh content and it’s evolving in Hawaii and the Pacific that a dance blog should post at least 2 to 3 new entries a week. Now that is being up to date.

"Impossible is only another name for unbelief; hopeless is often the signature
of doubt; incurable is but the present tense of undiscovery."

"Still Water (Love)" by The Four Tops

Dance blog reader/dancers visit blogs to get fresh information or insight on topics that are interesting, current and important to them. The most interesting are the less complicated ones with enough photos to make it more interesting. Dance Blogs tend to be more opinion-based than Dance Web sites. And the more different independent honest opinions the more interesting the blog.

"Come and Get It" by Badfinger

The real value of blogging isn't the capability of the tool, but the ability for each and every page on the site, each and every article, to invite and display feedback from readers. This is a dramatic difference because it changes a monologue, a "brochure," into a dialogue with reader/dancers able to reply. Indeed, often the most compelling reading in a blog site are the comments that others leave and the debate that often ensues as people add their two cents and disagree with each other.

"Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma," by The New Seekers

We have yet to see much of this in our Hawaii blogosphere because most of our reader/dancers are very polite in public. It will come but it will take time to be recognized and used in Hawaii, probably West Oahu will lead the way. While there are no laws stating that a site must have certain capabilities to truly be a blog, it is nonetheless true that most blogs allow comments and are not forcing anyone to revisit the site with any sort of frequency.

"Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is quite another."
