Line dancing's current popularity grew out of the disco period, when the country-western dance and music communities continued to explore and develop this form of dancing. Line dancing has become a popular recreation activity and is practiced and learned in country-western dance bars, social clubs, dance clubs and ballrooms worldwide.

You can line dance in pretty small spaces if

you don't have too many dancers.

It avoids the problem of imbalance of male/female partners that plagues social recreational dance clubs. Not only that but they learned later that for beginning dancers it develops good timing, rhythm, and acute awareness of the different music and consequently the dances corresponding to this music.

It is sometimes combined on dance programs with other forms of country-western dance, such as two-step, shuffle, and western promenade dances, as well as western-style variants of the waltz, polka and swing.

For us in the ballroom dance world, it is rapidly become an interesting and fun dance to break up the strict social dance pattern of the evening. And of course allows so many of the women a chance to dance when they have not had such an opportunity. The increase in interest by men is very gratifying, more men in the groups make everyone look better.
