Our Kine Roll On

By José Martinez, Waikele

Several decades back most dance clubs and night clubs had a standard playlist. Based on the syllabi of the different disciplines. Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Swing, Tango and Quickstep. Mambo, Merengue could be an extra attraction for the night. As the dance business has settled , we find that you could add another dance to the menu. It is imperative that you keep good records, to know in writing, how many were there on any given day of the week. When you add the new dance, it is a simple matter to find out if it is good, or bad. If it doesn't change anything it is not good enough. You don't want to add one more dance to your repertoire, only to find it doesn't change anything. Must look elsewhere.

"The older Social Dancers learn that the trick to keeping your mind nimble
is to keep learning something, and not only the dance moves."

Bachata derived from the older native dances, originated in the Dominican Republic. Bachata is a slower dance by Latin standards, at about 120 beats per minute and originally placed heavy emphasis on the guitar. Bachata derived from bands of three or four guitarists playing together often with a percussionist for working class audiences. It is unclear when the term "bachata" first became associated with a style of music but bachatas first were recorded as such in the 1970's. Perfect for the young Salsa dancers seeking the new dance that the young are always seeking and it is being very nicely accepted into Hawaii.

The Hustle originated in the disco era of the late 1970's and was popularized by music from artists like the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer and Barry Gibb and by the movie Saturday Night Fever. There were several styles of hustle originally but the New York Hustle is the only style that is widespread today, and is what is commonly referred to as "The Hustle." The Hustle is typically associated with disco music but it can be danced to many other styles of music. The best tempo for beginners learning the hustle is 100 to 125 beats per minute. Also picking up very well in the social dance circuit.

"Social Dancers know that no matter what happens ...
somebody will find  a way to take it too seriously."
