I was invited to a beautiful social dance in Wahiawa and anyone can tell when so many nice people are having fun. Interesting to note the increase in the beautiful Bachata music and so many people dancing it. It seem to be "in" as a Social Dance. Then there is the Line dancing at break time. Not acceptable all night long, but just beautiful at break time and more men nowadays, This makes it a little more respectable as a social dance.

Our social dance world is getting better all the time. We just have ti find
more ways of promoting our way of dancing.

The theme is "Thanksgiving", a time to be THANKFUL and APPRECIATE.

Multitudes in our nation have become specialists in the "science of misery." They are experts -- moral accountants who can, in a moment, tally all the wrongs society has ever done to them or their group. We have never talked with one of these people who was happy, blessed or content about anything. They expect an imperfect world to treat them perfectly.

"Jingle Bells"

The spirit of giving, expressing love and gratitude and a celebration of life help to make Christmas a very special time for all of us. Even if you are not a Christian, we can all enjoy the spirit of giving which is truly what this season is all about. “Tis the season to be jolly,”

The Season is upon us.

For Thanksgiving we can start with a good one.

From Mother Teresa?

People are unreasonable, illogical and self centered, Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish motives, Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and real enemies,Try to be successful anyway.

The good you do will soon be forgotten tomorrow, Do it anyway.
Honesty and frankness will make you vulnerable, Be honest and frank anyway.
People favor the underdog but the chum up to the top dog. Fight for the underdog anyway.

What you spend your life building can be lost overnight, Build it anyway.
Give the world the best that you have and chances are you will get kicked in the teeth.
Be thankful for the good things and give it anyway.

A "classic" song needs to be not only remembered, enjoyed and recognized by the current or original generation of music fans who were around when the song/album was released. The song needs to be remembered, enjoyed, and recognized by subsequent generations as well. There have been plenty of big hit singles who may have had an impact on the pop charts the year that they were released, but are virtually forgotten years later. On the other hand, there are other songs which may not have had as big of an impact the year that they were released, but have had a much bigger cultural impact in subsequent years and have much more longevity. It is the long term recognition that makes the song a "classic". In this year every social dancer is aware of the "Oldies But Goodies."

Social Dancing

This is looking better all the time. We are getting more dancers in the Social Dance world and more dancers are beginning to understand the dance scene on Oahu. And we should respect those that are not Social Dancers as we are. We have accepted that the disciplines can no longer tell us what is "correct." They considered themselves dancers and they are right. The stricter ones profess to dance it "correctly," according to their style, in the beginning, last century, It was reasserted quite frequently, however by the time of the Palladium, they danced it "correctly" and omitted that it was according to their style. The implication was that by default, anyone not dancing their way was dancing "incorrectly."

"Social dancers believe that not all interpretations of a dance work of art are valid."

This contributed to the obsolescence of the style as many of their dances are becoming obsolete and being supplanted by fad dances. And this is heavily supported by the under thirty dancers as a rule. Sorry, in Night Clubs, no Waltz, Polka,Tango or Paso Doble. it is accepted and no one complains. We all know that many dancers of the American Tango or the International Tango can look you straight in the face and tell you that the Argentines do not know anything about dancing Tango. Yeah man.

They can look you straight in the face and tell you the Brazilians don't know about dancing Samba. However they can tell you how to do it "correctly." You believe in the tooth fairy too. I for one, do not accept their authority on what is "correct." We dance to very few variations because we enjoy moving to the music. There are just too many beautiful variations out there where people are really dancing not just some prescribed movements that may have been "incorrect" from the very beginning.

"Social dancers believe that it matters enormously
if we alienate anyone from the truth."

La Milonga, 150 years ago.

La Orilla, a slum area on the edge of Buenos Aires, near the waterfront, the Indian Milonga was changing almost two hundred years ago, These drunken men loved to dance. Men would go to a bar to see a fight and a dance would break out. And the common sailor still carried most of the low class culture from one country to another. In Milonga territory it was mainly between the slums in Montevideo and Buenos Aires. Initially, "partner" Milonga might be best described as stopping the walking step to rub together the male and female genitalia areas by the pimps and the prostitutes. It was soon omitted and from these crude beginnings, it developed into something slightly more acceptable to the poor society around them, and soon became popular in the "barrios" (slum areas).

"The Tango is a sad thought that you can dance."

The idea that the development of the Milonga was by the prostitutes in the brothels dancing with the pimps or the patrons may be an appealing one but also a myth. The point was that the men were waiting because the women were otherwise occupied. If anything they would dance with each other. Obviously the brothel's income would be maximized by keeping the girls busy at their primary occupation, so certainly at peak periods where the brothel was busiest there would not be women available for dancing. In La Orilla, there may have been up to 40 men for every woman. And the Milonga musicians were forced to mold a Milonga music to entertain the men while they waited.

"El Dia Que Me Quieras" por Carlos Gardel

With the influence of the big influx of Europeans in the 60s, and their bandoneon, It would not be until the 1890s that the music and dance began to invade the middle classes, forcing the top people to get rid of the Milonga name. They came up with the name of the old obsolete Andalusian Tango and called it Tango. However the Milonga name could not be deleted that easily and it took 20 years to really change into Tango. And only because by that time it was introduced to Europe. In the rest of the world today the name Tango is used. In Argentina it is still intermixed with the name Milonga. Now there are at least 50 different Tangos around the world. Ten of them in Argentina. How many we got on Oahu?

do not want to waste it living someone else’s life."

imagine a nation where people did not bother to express gratitude,
a society devoid of benevolence and humility."
