Tango

Tango is a partner and social dance that originated in the 1400s by the Incas as La Milonga. It then evolved in 300 years by European influence in Peru, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay into a modified Milonga. The biggest differences evolved in the impoverished port areas of Argentina and Uruguay. The Milonga was frequently practiced in the brothels and bars of ports, where business owners employed bands to entertain their patrons with music. The tango is the result from an Argentinian Milonga. The name Tango was applied in the 1890s and the tango then spread to the rest of the world.

"Social dancers believe, that it's not too late to seek a newer and better world.”

Many variations of this dance currently exist around the world. Now that we have had the chance we find that there are almost 100 different Tangos danced through out the world. Nine of them in Argentina alone. Divide and you shall conquer works in dances too. The popularity of Tango would be much greater if it could be standardized to only a few. Fortunately, we have not done so bad in the US and have fewer choices. Social Dancers, remember?

"Nostalgias" por Carlos Gardel

In the US, three styles of tango have been rather loosely defined. American tango is when you've just started dating, and you're flirting in an atmosphere of sexual tension. Argentine tango is when you've just started sleeping together and you can't keep your hands off each other. International tango is when you've been married for seven years and you're only staying together for the sake of the children. This year will do a lot for the Tango on Oahu. How about the Filipino Tango? Happy Dancing.

"Social dancers believe, that Tango is not a dance, it is a feeling."
