Experience

By Jason Miramoto, Village Park

Just last week, I got an accusation of being an International Dancer by a Club Dancer. How about that? I have also been referred to as a "junk" dancer by International Dancers. So how do you like them potatoes? After four decades, perhaps I am not a dancer. I keep reading about the intricate and exact types of dancing in the International Style of Dance. But they insist they are dancing. I also read about Club dancers and how boring to dance the same old steps and how they find it necessary to learn new twirls and swirls.

"Social dancers do not have to have complete control over every muscle
in their bodies as in the disciplines. They can hear the music
and then just enjoy the body movement to the music."

They also insist they are dancing. I suppose it is a natural function of the dance world. It just doesn't seem like part of our dance world. Most of us are really not in their class. We are movers to music and we use the most basic of movements to our favorite music. That is all that is required, for the music is first and foremost. Any Waltz will not do. Ah but some of our favorites are a must. It's da moosic, dude. They can be so well enjoyed with few variations and just simple movements. Social dancing is with many partners and it just falls into place.

Anyone ever hear of a playlist? The greatest invention of the last century. A Rumba is not a Rumba. One can move to our favorite rumbas very nicely without standing a woman on her head or throwing her over your shoulder. Others do it, fine, but that is not us. The step, step, step that can be used in many dances is fine for beginners as long as the music is of prime importance. You will certainly move up to the quick, quick, slow, the rock step and chassé and you will be half way there. And if you don't enjoy the music it just ain't the same thing.

"Social dancers want to live for every moment, laugh every day and dance forever."
