Night time dancing?

By Sylvester Wong, Kahala

Many DJs are not really concerned with dancing but they like the sound in their ears and much of it is very good. But "you can dance Rumba to it" is normal for them. Many simply do not understand the song that "you have to dance Rumba" to, is different, even though they try to play for the "dancers." On Oahu we are having a better understanding and appreciation for the "Oldies but goodies." But I believe it is coming to light in the new blogging that is developing in our dance world. Feedback will get around and more people are exchanging views.

"To the music of a slow Rumba she swayed and postured to the music that had a regular beat of small drums and the air seemed to be filled with the perfume of some bitter spice."

Hopefully we will get more comments at the end of each blog, We will be getting our social dance group defined soon enough. For sure the "Bronze" that is developing will have twice as many step patterns than any discipline. And we can forget the Gold. That is for the more advanced exhibition and competition dancers. All the other groups, Line, Swing, Tango and Bachata./Salsa will consider themselves peripherals and it will be their choice.

Partner dancing is fractured, splintered and divided into many categories. There over 600 documented step patterns in most dances. Do you know of anyone that knows half of them? Fine for exhibitions, that is their kuleana, but for us we are just fine as partners making simple moves to music. We will gradually coalesce into a group just to enjoy moving to music. Why Cultural Dancing? Because it has been in our culture for a couple hundred years. Now, just let us dance.

"Social dancers don't just feel that they want to dance, they feel that they gotta dance.”
