Social dancers are pretty good at communicating with each other however some words are not quite clear enough.
Bachata: originates from Bolero and Son and later, from the Merengue. It was imported from Cuba into the Dominican Republic. With very similar instrumentation, the Bachata became popular guitar music in the Dominican Republic and evolved into its own dance. Now the music and dance are overwhelmingly successful in Hawaii.
Bossa Nova: A jazzed up version of the Samba that came from Brazil like a fad to the US and went out like a fad. However the rhythms are still considered classics in the entire world and in my humble opinion, the basic dance movements along with the rhythm of the music are some of the greatest.
Break: To change from a closed position to an open position. Usually applied to the Latin dances and includes the swing rhythm dances.
Broken Rhythm: A combination of slow and/or quick beats that take more than one measure as in Swing or Jive. In the old Latin Indian style danced to the old six count measure.
Bronze Division: The most elementary level of step patterns in the syllabus of the Dance Societies, and generally consisting of less than fifteen movements. In the cultural street dancing, it may contain 30 basic patterns.
Our dancing comes from a long way back. Most of our moves are very basic. Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Puerto Rican, American, British all have basic movements that are the same except danced to different music. This dates from the time when agriculture emerged throughout the world and drums and music also appeared. The first movements to music were the even step patterns. Similar to what we see Africans dance on TV. left, right, left, right and just keeping time to the beat, up, down, up down and it became group or "folk" dancing many years ago.
There must be a hundred different dance styles and moves that have been presented to the social dancers in Hawaii since the arrival of the newcomers. The whole smash has been generally considered to be a part of modern dancing. Many have been the offshoots of some discipline such American and the International Styles. The newer are someones interpretation of the basic movement to other music. And much of it is "natural" meaning that it must have been done from the very beginning by the "oddballs." Basic, Basic, Basic, not many of us know what that means.
