Our Evolving Dance

By Harold Lively, Liliha:

Ballroom dancing on Oahu was in the last century a world of class coupled with significant social and physical health benefits. It allowed people to be part of a unique social dancing group and dance to the rhythms of popular music. Is there a reason for the popularity of the "Oldies but Goodies"? And most of it was based on the American Style of Dance. A big portion of the International style came in the latter part of the century. If you wished to excel in your appearance and feel good about it, you could find a good Dance Studio just about anywhere.

"Social dancers were all beginners once, and they probably still would be if they hadn’t
stepped out of their comfort zone and “danced up” just to enjoy it a little bit more."

And Oahu has been fortunate to have had some of the best teachers in the Pacific. You could always browse through the large selection of costumes, shoes and accessories at prices you could afford to continue this most enjoyable and fun type of dance. With the Introduction of the International Style of Dance it became much more precise, since the goal was to compete and they would be judged. And many beautiful dance competitions were developed throughout the Islands. This also caused resentment in another growing phase of dancing,

The Night Clubbers and the "Street Dancers" intermingled and many eventually took some dance lessons. The Internationals did not wish association with these people and these people did not wish association with the Internationals. (Ballroom) Little did anyone realize that they were creating a third group when the Internationals seized "Ballroom" as their very own during the first year of the Palladium. And the dance scene of this third group is still shaping up very strongly,  We are still in process of finding a more proper terminology for this group, just to enjoy moving to "music." as a most natural human function.

"Social dancers believe that beauty of whatever kind,  in its supreme
development, may excite the sensitive soul to tears."
