Night Clubbing

Where to go Night Clubbing on Oahu if you're a grown-up that hasn't stopped dancing yet? The night club is changing every day on the Mainland and it is even better yet on Oahu. And the first accepted big change is not to assume that the club will pay the bills with the income from the sale of booze.

"Through these blogs read the most informed dancers in the Pacific."

The one thing that has distinguished an ordinary Cocktail Lounge and a Night Club from the very beginning has been the dance floor. Even a ten by ten which, let's face it, is pretty tough to dance Quick Step on it. And everything in our blogs is in three sizes, small, medium and large.

Anything less than 200 square feet is small. Up to 400 square feet is medium, (a 20 x 20 garage?) And few large, good night clubs will have the large, up to 30 by 30, 900 square feet. Where do you go clubbing if you're getting on, but still getting down? I have met many grown-up night clubbers who've created a scene all of their own in downtown Honolulu.

Most will understand that the Night Club cannot be open during the day except as a bar. But throughout the mainland they are gradually learning that there are plenty of hours available for other income. The Granada in Alhambra, California a prime example. Now has two large dance floors and dances classes in most categories. With the weekend evenings for the Night Club Scene.

They have discovered the juice bar. Dancing requires liquids but it does not have to be alcohol. And they do have a cover charge which has been going up because of the popularity of the entire dance scene. A middle of the week "Tea Dance" does very well and which could be a "Pau Hana" dance on Oahu.

In Hawaii, we have an increasingly larger older generation of social dancers.  And where is an active older dancer going to dance the night away without feeling like fish out of water among a sea of 20-year-olds? Of course we have our social clubs which are very nice but not "Da Reel Teeng."

The original one-nighter generation, which started in the early ’80s just before the advent of the "Palladium" are now 50-plus. There are many people for whom clubbing was a way of life but are no longer sure where they should go. The kids still have their dividing line and it has been moving up. "Never trust anyone over thirty." Once we understand this, it will all fall into place. The over forty will rule the roost.
