Ballroom Dancing?

The Mexican Civilizations had about 2500 different dances of record. These were professionals but there could have been in existence at least five thousand throughout the earth at the arrival of the first illegals in the Western Hemisphere. So someone comes to me and tells me about a new dance. I just think, "Yeah, Man." We can see that all about us, there are new dance fads everyday. And there are plenty of teachers willing to teach, for money anyway.

The Animal Dance craze in the early part of the 20th century in the US was directly correlated with the popularity of ragtime music which was morphing into swing. There were an endless varieties of animal dance fads, such as: Horse Trot, Kangaroo Hop, Duck Waddle, Squirrel Rag, Chicken Scratch Hop, Turkey Trot, and Grizzly Bear Shag. There were no new steps invented and the young were the designated targets. Both music and dance reflected the vibrancy of modern, urban influences. The music is typified by Scott Joplin’s rags and made popular to the middle class by "Alexander's Ragtime Band,” in 1911.

We still see it and we should all take note of the Disciplines. Let's face it, they know something. American Style has two divisions roughly dividing the European (Smooth) and the Latin (Rhythm.) The Smooth Division has Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz. The Rhythm Division has the Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Swing, Bolero, Mambo.

International Style has the Standard Division with Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quick Step. The Latin Division has Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive. These people without a doubt have had something for almost a century. Good dancers? Of course.

So that "Socially" we have readily acceptable dances that we can dance in partner fashion most comfortably to enjoy the movement to music. You can see it without the use of divisions. Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot and Swing. These seem to be the requirements, The rest is gingerbread, when was the last time you dropped into a Night Club for a little Paso Doble?
