We are not the same.

By Jason Hiyamoto, Manoa

Most of us try to be the same, as we have been instructed but we also understand that we are not the same. Every person is their own distinct entity. And hooray for that. There are many ways to look at social structures and one of the best is the Pyramid, comparisons in education, dance ability, social position, salary and whatevah. For our dance community the ability to dance can be easily correlated to the Pyramid, the top half is about one quarter of the bottom half.

"No amount of guilt can solve our past problems and
no amount of anxiety will change the future."

The top half of the pyramid has a much different outlook than the rest of us. And we are all well aware that they make up quite a few commandments of their own. In our dancing environment they are the "de facto" rulers, the officers, boards etc. The "de jure" rulers are the well known Creative Researchers And Producers. The Newletters, Web and Blog sites are very evidently diluting the power of the "Producers."

The net results are that most of the readers/dancers in our blogs, are mainly in the bottom half of the pyramid. Most of the recommendations in our blogs are for beginners with a touch of intermediate here and there. The top half can get along pretty good with what they have easily available now all over this island. And let's face it, when it comes to dancing, most of them are pretty damn good.

Line dancing may be starting at the bottom but it is a lot of fun and it seems to benefit men dancers most. However women are the overwhelming line dancers because they want to move to their favorite music and there are not enough men dancers around to partner dance. Simple. The realignment of the entire dance structure on this island, in this century has been astounding.
