I still meet beginners generally under 30, all I can say is Keep Going Jack. Sometimes I will explain the even rhythm, step, step, step, left, right, left, right. Waltz is the best one. If they can learn to enjoy the simple dances, feel the music, the timing, the rhythm and the styling then they are ready for the next type of dance. The ones with the quick, quick, slow or slow, quick, quick. Again the Foxtrot leads the group because it has many more variations that can be easily done. Then Rumba is the best bet, has the same slow, quick, quick rhythm and has that pure enjoyment of the music and the movement. And of course, that beautiful music is always there.

Most of the Fad Dances outgrow the music and the moves become more complicated and eventually fizzle out. The usual disciplines will have about 20 moves in each division, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Some will have Platinum which is really professional. Most social dancing can done and enjoyed using the Bronze division moves only. You can do the basic and the leader can turn to his left anyway he wishes and the ladies are terrific, they will follow beautifully. The lead can also turn right which is not so natural as the left turn. Just that and you have enjoyed music to some beautiful music. However in some disciplines the "correct" terminology for the right turn is the Natural Turn. How about that?
So the differences in the disciplines and social dancing are minor and the biggest distinction is "feel" in social and the "look" in the disciplines. The dancers of rumba usually embody a sassy, smooth, and sensual demeanor. The move set is very particular in the details but the most important feature is keeping a connection with your partner. The hip movement is not in the hip but in the knees. Social dancers move according to how they feel the music. In many of the disciplines it can jerky movements on the quick, quick, and a beautiful dance pose on the slow count;
