The Dance Scene in the US

By Gabriel Santos, Waipio

There are very few of us dancers in Generation W, (older than 75) into dancing of any kind. Generation X, covers those born after WWII, about 1945 - 1980 (35 years) and we still have quite a few on the island of Oahu. Generation Y, (The Millennials) are those born about 1980 - 1995 (35 years) and they are the bulk of the dancers on Oahu. However they are having less interest and less influence in dancing of any kind in the US. The ones having a greater interest are Generation Z, those 25 or younger. And they are going for the fad dances.

"Social dancers find a most important thing,
the dance learning experience is never over."

We all know that there are many benefits in dancing of any kind and a number ways that Social Dance enriches our lives. We like the music and we enjoy moving to our favorite music. Our friends are there and we make new ones. And newcomers find it easy to get in and let dance make a great addition to their lives, If they do this, people will find them interesting because they are a walking story. People's lives are on display in any dance club. We learn "Social," and we react to people to be part of the process. Do that, and you'll find interacting with people is quite pleasurable and, lucky we have Social Dance Clubs.

Because we have numerous reader/dancers with multiple levels of expertise, we must be concerned about our use of high-tech dance terms. Although on Oahu most of your reader/dancers will understand our terminology, a few of the newer ones won't. However, in our classes most of the words define our terms each time we use them. And fortunately too, most of our reader/dancers attend one or two socials on weekends where they may hear these words repeated. And we can lay some leather down in comfort.

"Social dancers are well aware that the experience of practicing
the dance steps in class is nothing like maneuvering
around a crowded dance floor."
