Communication

On the Island of Oahu all dancing seems to be settling into its own space without encroaching on others. We can accept the fact that we all have our own independent opinions and we are not clones of anyone. We do try to agree on as many things as possible simply because it makes life a little easier. Our terminology may differ among us but only slightly.

Social dancing may be variously classified by its proponents as a hobby or pastime.
How about leisure recreation or entertainment. As an art form, or maybe a sport?

Cut Time: A time signature in which the half note is the basic unit rather than the quarter and is usually equivalent to 2/2 time. It is used practically in all fast music in this century.

Choreography: The selection, design of steps and movement in dance. This also has to be put into rhythmic, geometric and dramatic sequence so that it has form, progression and purpose.

Claves: Twin pieces of cylindrical resonant hardwood played by hitting them five times in a two measure phrase. Three in one measure and two in the second measure. Evolved from the five beat measures in the ancient Mexican dance cultures.

Clique: A close circle of friends usually at the same level of dance expertise and sometimes tied together by the Mickey Mouse steps learned from the same dance club.

Close: The moving of the free foot next to the supporting foot with one change of weight.

Closed Position: The most normal position in dance and for us loosely defined. Man and woman face each other with shoulders parallel and the women slightly to man's right. Lady's elbow away from the body, man's right hand below the women's left shoulder blade. The man holds the woman's right hand in his left and her palm rests on his shoulder.

Competition Dancing: As the name implies, amateurs compete for prizes and professionals for money. Some must be danced in Standard steps and some are OPEN, anything goes.

"Never let yourself be bullied into silence. Don't let anyone define you, define yourself.
And your brain is there for a reason ... so write that viewpoint up anywhere."
