Dance Diversity

The diversity of our dance scene is still on the island of Oahu. The biggest group is the Social dancers, which is based mostly on the American style of dance. They are big in most Social Dance clubs and of course in the Night Club circuit. Second is the International style of dance which is so well controlled and defined that most are excellent exhibition dancers and are able to dance in competitions according to their exact rules. We have members from Hawaii doing very well in International competitions.

"Social dancers know that part of it is just paying attention."

Honolulu Dance Guide had at one time their version of social dancing and stated a long time back their intent on avoiding the International groups which is just fine with us, they have a perfect right to that. However, they should not lump us in with the Internationals, specially because we consider ourselves to be "cultural social dancers" and proud of it. And if the Internationals do not wish to be a part of us, they have the perfect right to do that too.

Then we have the peripherals: those with their own specialties which they prefer. Line dancing, Tango, Salsa/Bachata, Swing, Square, and Round dancing. And the young are much into solo dancing. And all these nice people should dance anyway they damn well please. The idea is moving to music and we are individual human beings, not clones.

"The most common way people give up their power
is by thinking they don’t have any."
