Shaping Up Nicely

The people in our West Coast dance environment are becoming more knowledgeable about dancing on the entire island. It had been a little too private clubby. Somethings that had never been discussed before are now being evaluated. What is best, American or International? Who puts out the best International Style Dancers? We are talking about competitions, are we not? Remember the Aloha Games? Somebody sure screwed that one up. Then at the height of Palladium popularity, some International people got impolite as they evolved the term "junk dancer." Not anymore, we, the dancers on this entire island are morphing into pretty nice people.

"Experienced dancers know that they can dance fox trot to jazz music and
the movement begins to change. A new freedom in the hips creates
a whole new effect not immediately identifiable as fox trot."

We do not have to agree on dancing in every thing, and most of us understand that answering many of the present questions may be difficult.  Everyone has their own definition of "ballroom dance."  There is no official governing board to set parameters and limits.  Even within competition ballroom dance, two dancers may have opposing priorities, aesthetics and values.  If you look at dance writings which describe the "dark age of ballroom dance", one dancer today may say that's actually the way ballroom dance should be, while another might call it reprehensible. Dancers may disagree in many other areas as well.  It's normal human individuality, and I think we can all respect that.

The Social Dance waltz may be quite different; it's sometimes described as a “one-step waltz”. It is an Even Step dance, left, right, left and one step on every count. Easy?. It really isn't forward-side-together; it's step-two-three, step-two-three. If you concentrate on the first step and let the other two just happen, you'll find the whole thing much easier. Turn your shoulders and your feet will follow — it sounds silly, but it's absolutely true. But make sure you actually do all three steps, even if 2 and 3 are just a transfer of weight. Some just go down onto a flat foot for beat 1, and up on the toes for beats 2 and 3, but no one knows whether a real expert would agree with that. Let's Dance.

Who was that dancer that said,
“I’ve spent plenty of money on booze and broads, and I frittered the rest away.”
