Our Syllabi

In this century we have a terrific choice of social dances much of it from the syllabi of the American and International Styles. The Bolero, Paso Doble and the Viennese Waltz have lost ground. We have Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Nightclub Two Step, Salsa, Bachata, Rumba, Cha-cha, Samba, Mambo, Hustle, Lindy Hop, and many that are still in the fad stage, The fad dances will of course come and go as they always have. And most of the fad dancers are the young. They are willing to try anything.

“Social dancers believe that hoping is how the impossible can be
possible after all and we can dance again.”

The over thirty have been around and they are well acquainted with the music that they have loved for decades. They develop a fondness for the "Oldies But Goodies" and even those change slowly as time goes by. Moving to that music and using the same movements over and over again in sheer joy is it for social dancers. There is the present solid Latin music and dance. Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Latin Waltz, Samba, and Tango. The rest, at present, will be gingerbread and time will tell. Anyone remember the "Lambada?" It must have lasted at least seven, eight years. It has been estimated that in the US, 50 million dollars were spent in Lambada lessons.

"Besame Mucho" by Stan Kenton

We shall dance in the Streets.

Now, the latest are Zouk, Zumba and Kizomba, the last being passed off as an African dance. Many are doubtful as to how they developed and they have been around a couple years. We no longer have the "reel teeng." and there will be others. The most solid coming up is the Mexican which at the moment has been close to 100 different dances with 50 different styles of music. When they prune this down to half, the rest of us can make some choices and they will be included in the "Latin" dance clubs.

"If you accept the expectations of others, specially negative ones,
then you will never change the outcome."
